Sunday Grid Iron

>> September 19, 2010

What’s your favorite day?

In Elementary my automatic reaction to that question was FRIDAY! with a squeal. Naturally, it was because Friday was my early day at school. Friday was the day that meant the week was over, and the weekend was coming. I still love Fridays, but I can’t call them my favorite.

In High School, and up until the last year or so, my answer evolved to Saturday. Saturdays were for sleeping in, and not doing much. Even if I had to work at The Rack, somehow Saturdays were just different than other days. I still love Saturdays, but they’re not my favorite.

Now that I am busy, and go to school six out of the seven days in the week, my favorite day is Sunday. And, not for the usual reasons that Utahns say they love Sundays. I don’t go to any church, and I don’t really go to any family dinners. Sundays are my absolute favorites because I can sleep in, I can stay in my pajamas all day, and I do have time to sit around and do homework, do the laundry I’ve ignored all week, cuddle with my Oliver, and blog. These are the reasons I love Sunday.

But…. The best part about Sundays, during my favorite season is this:

USA! USA!

>> June 26, 2010

"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."
~ Bill Shankly
(English soccer manager)

I LOVE the World Cup!

Even the buzzzzzzzzzzzing sound of the vuvuzelas.

What happened to Rooney? I can't believe how bad England has been doing. They're lucky they're still in it.

{But I guess we're lucky Wayne hasn't stomped on any crotches as he did in 2006, eh?}

If for nothing else, Cristiano Ronaldo is a reason enough to watch the World Cup.  Yum.

But this part has been THE BEST so far...

.. Team USA has had a lot of problems, from the Goal taken away from us {you knew I had to bring that up sometime}, to the fact that for some reason we like to let people score on us first, and play catch up the rest of the match.

But that's all going to change today, we're going to kick some Ghana ass! {even if I DID cheer for them in the previous round, someone in Africa had to at least get to the next round.. but now it's war}.

GO TEAM USA!

Happy List

I'm back! From my unofficial MIA. I'm not really sure what happened.. I guess with the weekend, and with life.. I just didn't have any blogger time. But I'm back!

These are some things that are making me happy this week..

  • Family BBQs - my cousins came in from California, it was good to see them and everyone on Memorial Day. YUMMY food too! We need to make it an occurrence that happens often!

  • Oliver..  My favorite boy.

               I can't believe he's almost 1!

July 2009
  • My new apple keyboard!! On Sunday our keyboard just stopped working! The stupid space bar just decided it had lived a long enough life, and was retiring. So sad! I even tweated:
nicoleelkington: myspacebarstoppedoworking!;(

(I don't know why I added an 'o'.. I guess my space bar stopped o-working?)
  • But now I have this! and it.is.awesome! It really is the little things.. right?

  • LAKERS back in the NBA Finals. Love them.

  • Lee won Idol! He's the best! I can't wait to see him in concert & buy his CD!

  • and, last, but definitely not last: the latest Harry Potter trailer. I am so pumped for some HP!

    Sundance Twenty Ten

    >> March 16, 2010

I just realized this week that I never posted my SUNDANCE pictures!! What the?! Well.. here they are, just, oh ya know, two months later - oops.

We had a lot of fun, and saw a lot of celebrities. I think my all time favorite was Robert Redford. We were so close to him.. and all I could do was point and say HEY! But I didn't even say HEY to him, I was saying hey to Ashley and Timmy to try to get them to realize and celebrate with me that we were in the presence of greatness. Silly, sad, but true. We didn't even get a great picture, but I know for sure I will be returning to that same spot next year, just in case he decides to go that way again. Ashley tried to take a picture, but in our frantic frenzy of excitement she didn't realize her camera was in video mode, so its a video..

You can even hear me say ROBERT REDFORD! I couldn't stop saying it, I was so amazed.

We also saw Jon Gosselin from Jon & Kate Plus 8, but we didn't get to take a picture, him and his newest girlfriend ran away from the paparazzi (and us) too fast. Oh well.

I love Sundance.. but I wish it wasn't so damn cold. The weather was so much better last year!

As far as movies we saw..

We saw The Dry Land, a movie about some returned soldiers from Iraq. It was sad, and eye-opening (the scene where they slaughtered the cow.. oh. my. hell, every time I think about it I almost become vegetarian. Almost). It had Wilmer Valderrama in it - Fez from That 70's Show, and it was actually kind of nice to see him in a more serious show. America Ferrara and Ryan O'nan were the main characters.

Our last day at Sundance we saw Bhutto. I loved this movie. So educational, and so very inspirational. Benazir Bhutto was a very awesome woman, with a tragic life, and a very tragic ending. Yet, this movie actually made me feel some hope for Pakistan. The film makers were awesome.

The craziest part about the Bhutto screening was who was in the audience. I was initially bummed because Bhutto's children and sister had been at the opening screening, so we didn't see them - how cool would it have been to see them? But instead, Ashley and I had the honor (if you can call it that) of watching the movie with the former President of Pakistan's son. Yes, you heard me right, former President Pervez Musharaf's son was in Salt Lake City, watching a movie that practically condemned his father's government for involvement in the awful death of Benazir Bhutto. During the Q & A session, Bilal Musharaf stood up and said "I wasn't going to say anything, but.. President Musharaf is my father." The air was sucked out of that small theatre within seconds. And I, with almost every one else in the room turned their heads super fast, to look at him. Wow. He basically said that the current President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, Benazir Bhutto's husband, was also corrupt and is losing support in the country. He also accused the film makers of skewing the movie. Wow.

We also went to the Snowboarding Half-pipe Olympic Qualifier in Park City, where the best American snowboarders were at their last competition to qualify to compete in Vancouver. We literally froze - if we go next time, we'll be more prepared, I don't know what we were thinking this year. But.. all in all, I was in the presence of Shaun White, Lindsey Jacobellis, Hannah Teter, and other greats. So all in all it was a great week!

It was a good Olympic Weekend, if you ask me.

Congratulations are in order for Canada's Alexandre Bilodeau, he is the first Canadian gold medalist to win on Canadian soil. How cool is that?

And, he seems to be a pretty good guy as well. Reading this story about his older disabled brother, and how he inspires Bilodeau, is beautiful.. and why I really like the Olympics.

    Félicitations Alex!
    (picture from Vancouver Sun)

And.. Apolo. Anton. Ohno. Congrats Apolo! And Good luck with the rest of your races! I hope those are a little bit less.. scary, lets knock the Koreans out of the race before the final lap! Eh? Or.. maybe not, maybe that's what makes it exciting, but my goodness it makes me so anxious watching him! I can't believe he almost got 4th!

I hope you get the gold in your next race Apolo!

    monday musings

    >> May 18, 2009

i like bullets. haven't done them for awhiles. so lets get some random, non-capitalized, bullets. shall we?

    • as explained in this post, i was very excited for the grey's anatomy finale last thursday. i was not disappointed! i couldn't believe the twist with 007, and the elevator scene at the end. i personally believe that izzy will push the elevator back up, choose to come back to alex, and leave george behind :( or maybe that is what i'm hoping. i don't think i'll watch the show if izzie's not there. she was who got me interested in the show in the first place. always loved katie heigl. clear back from my father the hero .
    • haven't had our reviews at work yet. who knows what that means. i really thought they were supposed to be on friday, but they weren't. how annoying - we all know that she had to turn them in to HR and management on thursday , so its not like she's pondering what to say. geeeze.
    • i have a wii fit addiction. i have lost give or take, 7 pounds, because of that beautiful invention. i have also been struggling to eat right as well. but i had pizza on thursday night, and friday afternoon, and it made me feel so sick and greasy by friday night! i guess pizza no longer does well in my we eat a lot of vegetables body.
    • there's a new wii thing now: wii active. i want it. anyone want to buy nikki a present? cuz that's what she wants.
    • american idol: i hope adam wins. i truly do. i guess whatever happens, happens. because really, adam will be going places either way. and in all honesty, they both will. i just like winning, so i think he should win, because i think he deserves it. capiche?
    • had a lot of fun with amanda last week, at costa vida. she's so funny. i love it. we are planning on screaming our lungs out on the catapult again this year, june 13th, here we come.
    • notice how i'm planning a month ahead? thats what i've been doing lately. i'm like "okay, so wanna go to see that movie? i can go monday or wednesday.." and then i have it all planned out. i don't know if its because i feel like i don't have a lot of evenings off, so when i do, i'm like k lets go! but i amuse myself. at least i already know i'm going to lagoon at least twice. plus, i gotta go with the brother and sister at least once. i love lagoon. its my version of a vacation this summer. don't judge.
    • i'm going to see angels and demons this week. yay for me. i loved the book. but maybe that is just cuz i loved roma.
    • i told hikmet i can't do the book festival this year, a few days ago. i felt bad. i really wanted to do it, but where i'm working full time at the rack, and taking 17 credits, i just don't think its mathematically possible to fit in 20 hours of book festival-ness. although, i will at least be going to the festival this year. october 24th is already blocked off in my planner. haha.
    • yay lakers yesterday! they. are. the. best. bring it on denver, i dare ya.
    • and i'll close with one of my favorite quotes. i love john lennon. but you guys know that ;) If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace. ~ John Lennon

    Sending love to the Lakers

    >> May 12, 2009

I have always been a Laker fan, well maybe not always but ever since Sophomore year in High School. That team, from 2000-2003 when they were the best, will always be my favorite team ever. With Shaq, and Kobe, and Shaw, Fisher, Fox, Ron Harper, I love it. But, the Lakers last year and this year are getting back up to that same level. I love Kobe. But I also really like Ariza, Odom, Gasol, Luke, Bynum, and I will always get giddy for Derek Fisher.

They play tonight, and they are going to win. I know it. I was so devastated that they lost last game. What were they thinking?! And, I am scared that Odom won't play. He fell so hard last time. Argh. They must win!

    Go Lakers!

    Spring has Sprung

    >> April 10, 2009

Back to bullets, Yes I am.

    • I worked 8 days in a row at the rack. From the day we opened, last Thursday, until I got my first days off yesterday and today. My feet are swollen because I stood too much, for too long, for too many days. Awesome. I only have to work tomorrow, and then I'm off again for Easter Sunday. Hallelujah!
    • Yesterday was a fun day. I hung out with my little brother Timmy for most of the day. We went to Wendy's, investigated world populations together {who knows where that came from: his idea, I swear}, and then belted it out on Rock Band. I love that little man.
    • This somewhat sunny weather, {well, there's not any snow.. } plus the swollen feet problem, has me wearing flip flops. I LOVE flip flops! Probably a bit too much.. but what can ya do? I think it is the freedom of them, the part where if and when I paint my toe nails people can actually see it, while I'm being all proper and still wearing shoes - which I loathe - I hate wearing shoes!
    • .. and the flip flops led to think about Spring and Summer and how I want to do everything awesome this summer! The family has been talking about going back to Disneyland in September-ish, but I don't know if it will be able to happen or not. We will see. We will see.
    • So while I wait on the Disneyland idea, here are a few things that I am excited about, now that the weather is a little better.
      • Thanksgiving Point's Tulip Festival is April 17th - May 2nd! I have never been to the festival, always wanted to, but somehow missed it. Last year I was all set to go, but then the ground still wasn't really thawed, and the rumor was that the festival sucked because it was lacking in tulips.. so I didn't go. But I am going this year!
      • The ZOO. I love the Zoo, I really do. And they have a new baby of my favorite monkey! The Colobus monkey. It was born August 11th last year, so he should be all cute this spring / summer. When Tim, Ash, and I went last year there was a baby Colobus too. So it should be cute for there to be two young ones playing around still. I love it. They also have somewhat new Golden Lion Tamaran Twins that were born March 2008.

Colobus Monkeys, Hogle Zoo, March 2008
      • I also want to go to Lagoon again this summer. I think I want to buy the Lagoon Season Pass, for $95, since if you go more than twice in the year, it makes the most sense money wise to just buy the pass. I'm not sure if my friends are buying them this year though, so we'll see what happens. Me & Amanda really need to ride the Catapult again. That was so Awesome!! Click here to read the stories of Lagoon fun from last summer.

      • I also want to go see Miss Saigon at Pioneer Theatre Company. I really really do.. I hopes I cans.
    • The NBA playoffs start in ONE WEEK! Go Lakers!!
    • Last but not least, the movie Fast & Furious. Its. Awesome. Yes. It. Is. Loved. It. :)

    Fests, Parades, Inaugurations, and Friends

    >> January 24, 2009

This past week has been busy, and fun.

Last Friday, The University of Utah football team had a Championship Parade in downtown Salt Lake. For anyone who doesn't know, the Utes won the Sugar Bowl Championship in New Orleans on January 2nd, where they beat Alabama 31 to 17 in a fabulous game. It was awesome! This brought them to an even more awesome record of a 13-0 season. So of course we had to celebrate. My little brother really likes sports and watched the Utes very closely this season, so I convinced my mom to let me check him out early from school and we headed down to the Parade. We rode trax, and saw some quite interesting people on our way down, and even crazier people on the way home. It was a lot of fun.

Tim and Me bored on Trax

Tuesday, was my favorite day of the week, and perhaps my favorite day of the Year. I was so excited for Barack Obama, you'd think I personally knew him. Two out of three of my classes that day were canceled, so I decided to skip French and stay home. How could I miss the Inauguration? I was practically glued to the TV. for hours.

On Wednesday, my sister Ashley and I decided that it was just ludicrous that being Utah natives we had never been to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, and drove up for the afternoon. We got there right after my classes were over, around noon. At first, it was kind of boring, not much going on. So we looked at the map and festival pamphlet that they give you and tried to decide on a movie to go see. We chose Crude. But we had a few hours to kill so we wandered Main Street, hoping to see some celebrities or something exciting. We walked down to the Music Cafe and listened to Angel Taylor, I really liked her. Apparently she's the next Colbie Caillat. She was pretty funny too. We sat on the bench, and I saw some guys with tight pants and interesting hair and said "Look it's the Jonas Brothers!" Totally kidding. Then we heard them sing.. and liked it. Their name is Locksley, we really liked them as well. Minus the tight emo pants.

    I should be a Celebrity

"The Twins" : Me and Ashley

After Locksley, we wandered some more and took some pictures of ourselves. Some weird guy walked by us and yelled all highpitched "Sir! Don't take pictures of me" like he wanted everyone to think he was famous or something. We were pretty sure he wasn't, and thought that he was just stupid. I saw him at Target yesterday. Working. The lady with him asked my sister and I if we were twins; and later took our picture, saying she "had to have a picture of the twins," Crazy people.

Walking back up the street, some guy said that if we wanted to see someone to take pictures of, Chris Rock was up by the O.C. Tanner Rolex Lounge. So we went up there. We never saw Chris Rock, but we saw some other famous people. One guy, Mike Burton was there, these other girls acted like he was famous, and he looked important since he was being followed around by a camera man and all. But, we're still not sure exactly who he was. We then saw Anthony Edwards and Minnie Driver come out of the Lounge. That was awesome! I really like Anthony Edwards when he was on ER, and on an alltime classic, Top Gun. He actually allowed for people to take a lot of pictures, Minnie kind of just ran away so we just got the back of her head.

    Anthony Edwards

    Minnie Driver
(She's the one with the black hat and brown curly hair, running away)

    Adrian Grenier??

After our Celebrity encounters, we wanted more... we heard that Burt Reynolds was inside the Lounge, but never saw him come out. Sadness. And we saw a guy that could be Adrian Grenier, but probably isn't. We can dream though right? After all of our Celebrity sightings, it was too late to get on the waitlist for the movie, and we were starving so we headed to Taco Bell and called it a day. Next year we are determined to plan more, and buy tickets ahead of time. We might just have a career with the Paparazzi.

One regret I do have, is not knowing about a film that was at Sundance, that I was unable to see just because it was played on days that I had to do more responsible things, like work or go to school. It's called, The Reckoning. It is about the International Criminal Court. It was nominated for an award though, so hopefully it will get it and I can see it when it comes out on DVD. ~~ crossing fingers ~~

Friday, I went to Applebees with longtime high school friends: Alisha, Jihyei and Suzanne. That was a lot of fun. It had been a long time since I had seen Suzanne, and at least 6 months since I had seen Jihyei, so it was fun to catch up. Hopefully the next time we see each other won't be quite that spread out. We decided that someone really just needs to say "We are meeting here at this time, on this day, hope you can be there," instead of creating long email threads of complaints and opinions on where we should go and when. Much easier when it's simpler.
    Suzanne, Alisha, Me, Jihyei

All in all it was a good week. Guess I should go do some homework now.

    Thirty days hath September...

    >> September 2, 2008

"My favourite poem is the one that starts 'Thirty days hath September' because it actually tells you something."
    ~ Groucho Marx

Oh man.. life is so crazy, isn't it? So, I know I just barely wrote about how I had a new job with America Reads and I was so excited, blah blah blah.. WELL, I am not working there anymore! I never really even did. The advisor, was.. for lack of a better word, stupid. And, the teacher I was to have worked with never got in touch with me, who knows who's fault that was, the teacher could have been completely innocent in the whole debacle, but I will never know. HOWEVER, I Do have a new job! I got the Book Festival Internship (see where I'm working here: utahhumanities.org), and I started last Monday. I really like it. It's going to be a challenge, but I think I am up for it. I really am excited to be working with a nonprofit, and I love books, and it's very interesting to me to see how an event like the annual book festival here in Salt Lake gets planned. There are so many details!

What else has happened since I have written.. I have been without a computer for a few days, and it's killing me! I hate not having a computer. It makes me feel so cut off from the world. Ick. Well, the Democratic Convention ended, and I loved every minute of Barack's speech. I will post it in full for those of you that didn't see it at the end of this post. I sincerely love that man. I really do. I think that when I get my Internet back and are able to type more I will do a whole post about why I think everyone should vote for him. So keep your eyes open. ;) hehe. Oh, and speaking of Barack, I love that everyone at my new job is a Democrat! It's a beautiful thing! (not that I'm republican prejudiced or anything...)

Oh, and school has started. Oh school... I always want to start and then once it's here, I'm like seriously? I have to keep doing this? I really need to just FINISH!!

I also have to say yay for friends! I spent time with three of my favorites this past week and I was very happy that I did. My friend Kim and I went to a place, that I now forgot it's name.. ha, they're famous for cookies? Anyway, I always love my times with Kim because she understands my opinionated, liberally democratic-ness, and it's awesome to talk to her about things! I just wish I could be taking her great Africa class with her, it sounds so great, and I am so jealous. Then, on Friday I went to a movie with my sister Ashley, because we were simply bored out of our minds and didn't have much to entertain ourselves with. We went to Jordan Commons to eat some of the Mayan Expresses Nachos, which has become our ritual each time the two of us go to a movie, since way back when the Two Towers Lord of the Rings movie came out. We saw Traitor with Don Cheadle, it was interesting, and made me think, but I'm not so sure it's a movie I would buy or anything. However I do love Don Cheadle, that I do. And then last night, I went to the Cheesecake Factory with my friend Amanda. We had an interesting waiter, who looked like Edward Norton.. and after fighting with him about my cheesecake that I got to go, without nuts!, it was a great night too. Amanda's great because she's such a peppy person.. it makes me be peppy, and that in itself is really cool.

I've also been reading Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince again, outloud, with my brother and sister. It's been really fun, I like that book but it has been so long since I read it! We planned on reading it because the movie was coming out in November, but now it's been changed to July, so we'll probably read the 7th one after this. But it has been good. Tim needs to read more, and this way it's a lot more fun, and we can help him understand things when things get confusing or she uses words like heir-loom, and he's like "say what?"

It also rained this weekend, I love the rain! I was scared about Hurricane Gustav though, so I'm glad that he subsided into a much smaller storm. Eek. I hate Hurricane Season.. But I do love Fall.. and I'm going to end my ramblings of today with why I do.

    1. The leaves! not just the changing of the colors.. but the leaves on the
ground that go "crunch, crunch, crunch" as you walk. I'm excited for that!
    2. School - yes, I know, school.. but it makes me feel very purposeful.
Like I am actually trying to make myself better or something.
    3. Football! Yay! The NFL kickoff is in two days, and I am excited. Go Cowboys!
    4. TV! - I am always so super exited once all of the reruns are over from the summer, and Hasselhoff and Pears stop judging America's Talent and we can go back to normal, with my Grey's Anatomy, One Tree Hill, ER (Carter's coming!), and my new favorite from the spring - Lipstick Jungle!
    5. Sweatshirts
    6. RAIN!
    7. Voting: I get to flex my democratic muscles and share my voice each and every November.

and now I will close with the poem Groucho Marx was speaking of up above just there ^,

“Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November All the rest have thirty-one, Excepting February alone, And that has twenty-eight days clear
    And twenty-nine in each leap-year.”

Oh, and here's Obama, my fave man.

    Darfur, and the Olympics

    >> August 16, 2008

"I am saddened not to be able to attend the Games. The Olympic Games represent something powerful: that people can come together from around the world and do things that no one thought were possible. However, the denial of my visa is a part of a systemic effort by the Chinese government to coerce and threaten athletes who are speaking out on behalf of the innocent people of Darfur."

,says Joey Cheek, after at the last minute, he was denied his visa to goto Beijing for the 2008 Olympics.

Joey Cheek, who was a 2006 Olympic speed skating gold medalist has not been shy about his opinions of China's contribution to the violence in Darfur. So what? They put a muzzle on him? Joey Cheek is the president, and co-founder of Team Darfur, an international coalition of athletes dedicated to raising awareness about, and bringing the end to the violence in Darfur.

But why should anyone be surprised? China has been supporting the Sudanese acts of genocide in Darfur for years now. According to one report, from save darfur.org, "Sudan buys 90 percent of its small arms from China, as well as big ticket items such as A5 Fantan ground-attack fighter jets. Despite an existing UN Security Council arms embargo for Darfur, China and Sudan are working together to exploit a loophole to keep the arms flowing. Specifically, China argues that it sells weapons to the Sudanese regime in Khartoum, and that it cannot be held responsible if Sudan then sends those weapons on to Darfur in violation of the embargo" Cannot be held responsible? C'mon, SERIOUSLY?!?

This is what Joey says, on his blog.
"This account was actually set up so that I could blog from Beijing, but as many of you have probably seen my visa was revoked by the Chinese government less than 24 hours before my flight was to depart. It is of course disappointing to me, but I am not alone. Brad Greiner, Kendra Zanotto, and Chris Boyles all had visas revoked or denied. I find this very concerning because I believe that it is an effort to silence anyone who is even suspected of disagreeing with the Chinese government.
I remain a huge believer in the power of the Olympic Games to bring people together and to be a force for conflict resolution around the world. The athletes that have joined Team Darfur did so out of a sense that the more than 2 million men, women, and children, who have been driven from their homes in Darfur deserve protection. Brad and I founded Team Darfur because we feel trying to stop conflicts such as the one in Darfur are exactly what the Olympics are about.

The recent media attention that has been paid to my situation has given us a spotlight to focus on the plight of the people in Darfur, but we must continue to fight to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis. The story of this Olympic Games is certainly not finished, but I want to personally thank the more than 25,000 people who wrote to support the athletes competing in Beijing that are members of Team Darfur. I am moved by your words and I know that the athletes are too.
Best of luck to all the athletes - even though I am not there in body, I am rooting for you with all of my heart here in the States!"

The opening ceremonies are always fun to watch. But this year in China, it was a little better. The Chinese really know how to put on an artistic show. However, my favorite part was Lin Hao. The little boy that walked with the flag-bearing Yao Ming. This little boy was in the Sichuan Province earthquake back in May, he was buried under the rumble but he fought his way out. This in itself, is a pretty cool accomplishment. But Lin Hao didn't stop there. He then went back into the rubble to help not one of his classmates, but two, pulling them each out separately. When asked why he went back in twice, little 2nd Grader Lin Hao said that he was the Hall Monitor.. and that he was just doing his job.

I think that is a very Special Kind of Awesome.

And the Los Angeles Lakers win Game 3! Yay! They really were starting to have me worried. But I still believe..

Kobe did good as (almost) always, but Vujacic did really awesome! He said, "That's what I love the most and that's what I live for -- those kind of games," and I believe it.. he was great.
