Freedom for Sarah

>> September 14, 2010

I am so excited for Sarah and her family. I hope she can get the medical attetion she seriously needs, and that perhaps Iran will realize that to get the goodwill intentions they yearn for at the UN General Assembly, they will need to release ALL of the hikers.

But at least we are moving somewhere. I'm sure today was really hard for Sarah though, leaving her fiancé behind, in prison. Eep.

Sending Love to the Hikers

>> May 23, 2010

Ugh ~ this just makes me sad. 10  MONTHS is such a long time! I feel awful for the hikers, and their families and their friends. How terrible would that be, to be stranded so far away, to not be able to see or speak to your family, and your friends.

Follow @freethehikers on twitter, for upto date information on their plight.

* News release from Reuters, about 5 minutes ago states that Iran has said that the hikers are spies (NOT true), BUT they've offered to do a prisoner swap:
Iran's intelligence minister said on Sunday he had no doubt three U.S. citizens arrested last July near the Iraq border are spies and called on Washington to propose a prisoner swap to secure their release.

Crossing my fingers for a solution. I really thought there was a big chance the hikers would be allowed to return to the United States with their mothers.

Sending Love,

Common Misconceptions about the Niqāb

>> April 26, 2010

The other day, Octavia Nasr from CNN tweated (@OctaviaNasrCNN) this article, about the Niqāb (aka: Burqa). I thought it was really interesting.. check it out!

(picture from: wikipedia)

From Times Online July 21, 2009

The niqab, fact v fiction
How much do you really know about the niqab?
An insider guide to common misconceptions

1.The niqab is a symbol of female subjugation.

None of the niqab-wearing women who I know, wear it because they have been forced to. They see it as an act of devotion to their Creator: the culmination of a spiritual journey. In fact most of them are women who were born and brought up in the UK; many are White or Afro-Caribbean Muslim converts to Islam who have chosen to observe it. The hijab, niqab and abaya are outer garments and are worn only when outdoors or in the presence of men who are not close relatives and so, contrary to popular belief, underneath their robes, in family and female-only settings Muslim women are often very fashion conscious and outgoing. They dress in everyday clothing; they get their hair done, go on holiday and even buy lingerie!

2. Women who wear the niqab cannot possibly contribute to society

People are surprised to hear that niqab-wearers come from varied vocational backgrounds. They include doctors, teachers, dentists, authors, social workers, university graduates, lecturers and more. They usually prefer to work in a female environment and so would not wear the face-veil all the time. Other women say that wearing the niqab actually makes them feel more comfortable when they are working with men. It is ironic that the very women who are the subject of debate are far from being a burden on society: they don’t get drunk and disorderly, don’t smoke and are likely to be very good citizens. Many of them are full-time mothers who take pride in raising well-educated children who will be an asset to British society.

3. The niqab isn’t in the Qur’an

The Qur’anic worldview presents a complete system of living, which permeates the daily lives of observant Muslims....

Friday!

>> February 26, 2010

Doesn't it make you excited for Spring?
I can't wait.

I'm so excited it's Friday, that I decided to use bullets. Fun, right?

  • I have a cold. How un-cool is that? Last Friday I decided that I was going to have a stomach flu.. or something, and as soon as I started to feel normal, I even posted on twitter that I was starting to be okay again.. Then, my dad decided to share his cold. People think about getting sick, and I get sick! Ach!

  • Today is Friday. And that makes me happy, no, not because I get to sleep in tomorrow, I have classes in the morning (where I have a midterm I haven't yet really studied for, oops). But I also get to go out to Dinner with some of my favorite people tonight! At Jason's Deli.. which is awesome, because the food is good. But do you know what the best part is? Complimentary Ice Cream Cones!

  • Tomorrow.. after the midterm that I need to study for.. I am going for Pizza with my High School friends. I'm excited for that too. I hope everyone can come! I'm hoping that it doesn't snow so Suzanne can come.. yes

  • The Olympics are so good. I'm kind of sad that they're almost over. Some of my favorites have been.. Apolo Ohno, for sure! Shaun White. Lindsey Vonn. Joannie Rochette, that won the bronze medal last night. That was so touching, I felt so bad for her, but I think its awesome the way the whole world pulled behind her and really supported her after her mother's death. So hard.

  • And the Canadian girls Hockey team. I know they beat us so I should be mad at them. But how cool is it that everyone in the stands sings along to Oh Canada?! We don't do that... and they've won the gold like that, three times. three times! in a row! Talk about some major girl power.

  • The Healthcare Summit: all I have to say is wow. It was historical, but I don't know that it got us anywhere.. can we make it a weekly thing for a few weeks? And that exchange between Obama & McCain "we're not campaigning anymore, John" wow. (quote may not be exact, don't hate me)

  • I'm also back on Twitter. Blame Lina Buchanan for that. Silly, silly Lina.. was all excited when she joined Twitter a few weeks ago, and I was all "I did that for awhile, but got sick of it" and then I decided to log back in and see what was going on. Welll.. that was weeks ago, and I'm still addicted. And I've met so many new friends, and have really decided that I want to join some of the weekly chat things that they do. Yeah.. I like it. Again! So check me out @nicoleeelkington, if you want have a tweeterati part-ay.

Yay for Friday! What are you doing this weekend?

If Democrats behaved like Republicans..

>> February 23, 2010

haha, I kid, I kid..

I haven't REALLY written about politics for awhile, because, frankly, it gives me a headache. I truly believe in our President, I do. And I believe that most people in Washington, are really there to make a difference, and to change things. Perhaps its not how I think it should be done, but I think their hearts are in the right place. Maybe that just makes me seem idealistic, or naive or something, but that's how I feel.

However, what is going on with the no-communication, no-Bipartisanship stuff? I don't think its just one party's fault either, I think all of Washington right now is to blame. I have to say, I wanted the Democrats to use their majority, I wanted them to do what I feel is right, and pass the health care bill. But I also see that they went about it all wrong, and now we have to live with those consequences. Nevertheless, they're not the only ones that are guilty. This "say no" political party of tea-partying Republicans is driving me completely crazy! I heard someone say that they'll just say no for 3 years, until Obama's gone, because they don't want to help the Democrats get anything done. Seriously?! If that's the case, and all we care about is winning the election in 3 freakin' years, then maybe our government is truly broken.

On a slightly different note, did you see that Ron Paul won the Straw Poll at the CPAC Convention this weekend? Really! RON PAUL?! I'll have to leave that rant for a different day.

A day for President's

>> February 15, 2010

Today is President's Day. And President Barack H Obama is my President, he's the first, and only President that I have ever really believed in. I voted for him twice, once to choose him to be the Democratic candidate, and once to choose him to become this nation's President. Is he perfect? Absolutely not. Has he done everything he needs to? Not yet.

Do I believe that he's doing the best he can, and that his heart is in the right place?

Most Definitely.

Happy President's Day, President Obama!

Revolution

Today, I am scared for Iran. I am scared that there is violence.. reading Twitter early this morning, my stomach was in knots. I try to not get worked up over things I cannot control, but I just feel for the Iranian people, and their desire for a different world. Their desire for change. Many Americans complain about their lives here, but when we get down to it, we are so lucky to be able to say our complains out loud, to be able to say YES I am a Democrat, and for my annoying friend Kyle to try to tell me I'm wrong, because he's much more conservative than I. We are so lucky to be able to do that. So lucky.

When the Iranian Elections first occurred last year, I really liked the blog at: Tehranlive.org, I loved the pictures, and posted them on my blog, more than once (see here). But, as I was looking at information yesterday about the 31st anniversary of the Iran Revolution of the 70s, I looked at his blog, and read this:

Amir Sadeghi was arrested in Tehran by Iranian Security Forces.
Iranian security forces arrested one of our Photographers, "Amir Sadeghi"
at the office of Farhang-e-Ashti newspaper in tehran.
The number of journalists arrested in Iran has reached to 55 persons.

With hope for freedom of all prisoners.

I was so sad!

Fast forward back to today, and I read tweet after tweet about protests, and the green movement chanting at different areas around the city, about people getting arrested, and other reports that some people were released this week - which is just one positive out of so many negatives. And then I heard a really annoying thing: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that they are now at a capacity of a 20% uranium enrichment ability. (he even said, if we wanted to manufacture a bomb, we would announce it.. after he had just announced that Iran is now a "nuclear state") I don't really understand that, I'm not some sort of weapon engineer, but that's not good. Its not good for the world, its not good for Israel (even though those that know me, know I have issues with Israel anyhow), but least of all, its not good for diplomacy. And when I start to think about how there's no chance of diplomacy for the country of Iran, on the world stage, I get very nervous, and very sad for the people of Iran.

So, I know we can't do much, but I ask you, my friend that has made it this far in this long, newsy, political post, to please, at least send the people of Iran your good thoughts, prayers, and maybe, just maybe, we can help them.

For more information..

I really like Octavia Nasr's tweets on CNN.

CNN is also continuously updating about Iran, here.

Nauseous

As many of you know, I've been sick this past week. I wasn't sure why, until I watched the coverage about this special lady, that I can't stand, and it ALL made sense.

Can you believe she had to have notes on her hand? HER HAND?! For a Q&A session, done right after she mocked President Obama for using a teleprompter at speeches.

Sigh.. I got in trouble for that, writing on my hand that is, in oh ya know, 4th grade.

Even Robert Gibbs mocked her.

I believe in democracy, I do.. I believe in voting, and that everyone should do it. But, I really wish that the republican craze hadn't taken over Massachusetts. I'm pissed. And, I'm sure Teddy is too! My hope now is that, as some reports said today, that they might attempt to just pass the Senate Health care Bill through the House, before Sen-Elect (I already hate him) Brown of Massachusetts shows up in Washington.

Teddy, I miss you.

Teddy Kennedy was one of my very favorite politicians. I love him.. and, I'm scared to death today that Massachussetts is going to turn its back on him, and everything he stood for. They made him one of the longest serving Senators. Ever. One would assume he adequately represented them, and their beliefs. So what changed?

So here's to Teddy, and to keeping Teddy's fight for Health care alive. I pray that Massachussetts will do that today. Because if not, that just makes my stomach hurt with anxiety.

So...

C'mon Mass! Vote Coakley!

Haiti: My heart breaks for you.

I am so depressed about Haiti! I wish I could DO something. I mean, yeah, I've made the $10 donation to the International Red Cross, and I plan on donating to UNICEF this week. And, I know that my money will definitely go towards good things, I just wish I could do more. Or, perhaps, I wish more had been done before hand. Its very Hurricane Katrina-esque to me, let's be honest, I didn't know that New Orleans had a very poor side of town until after Katrina. But other people did! Important, influential people, that could have done something about the levees, and could have done something about urban development. Same goes for Haiti! I can't claim ignorance with that one. I knew about the "mud cakes" that women feed their children, not for nutritional value of any kind, but just so that their childrens stomachs will be full of something , so that they can feel some sort of relief from hunger pains. Now, in a country where that is common place, how can anyone expect them to be able to pull themselves out of this catastrophe? In some ways its ironic, because I'm devastated that so many people had to die.. but I'm excited that now at least people are now paying attention. I hope that we can say "Never again" as we did for New Orleans, and that we can truly assist Haiti in becoming a better place for its people. Because, my hell, its not okay for them to live like that, when they are soooo close to the United States. Call it my liberal guilt, that's okay, maybe that IS what it is, but we've got to do something.

Click here to learn about donating to UNICEF. (my favorite organization!)
and click here to learn about donating to the Red Cross - OR! just send the word "Haiti" in a text to 90999, and they automatically take $10 off of your phone bill.

World AIDS Day

>> December 1, 2009

Today is World Aids Day. It has been TWENTY FIVE , 25! years since HIV/AIDS first reared its ugly head. 25 years. The world of science has brought us very far, people that were once sentenced to death once they were diagnosed with HIV, are now able to live long, normal lives. At least in the modern Western world.

I personally get very angry when I think about how not fair it is for people in underdeveloped countries don't get the same benefits as those in this country. I get very angry when I think about how the pharmaceutical companies raise their prices higher and higher each year, inadvertently causing the deaths each year.

However, there are organizations out there, like the (RED) Campaign, the ONE campaign, and WorldVision, that are able to provide help to those people. Did you know that many people with HIV die of Tuberculosis? TB! A disease that in the United States, barely even exists.

So please, on this World AIDS Day, take a minute to listen to the 2 videos below. Listen to Bono talk about the (RED) campaign, and perhaps make a donation. The really cool thing about (RED) is you can make a donation, through buying merchandise you already want. Like my (RED) campaign Ipod, for example. Click here for more information on The (RED) Campaign: joinred.com, you can also check out the (RED) blog here.

(Bono's message is for the UK.. so he speaks of pence (pennies), and the chemist (the pharmacy).. so don't let that ruin his message).

And Princess Kasune Zulu, of Zambia, urges you to call your Congressional representatives this World AIDS Day. Let them know that AIDS is NOT a political disease, and the world does not have time to play political games. The United States must keep its promise. We all must keep our promise, why were you lucky enough to be born in a well developed country? Why was I? And why wasn't she? I don't understand the answer to why... but I sincerely believe that EVERYONE needs to do their part, to end such calamities. On this, the 21st anniversary of World AIDS Day, let's do our part, and think of how cool it will be, to not have to celebrate the 40th Anniversary: because we won't need it.

PS: Starbucks is also helping out today, so if you get a chance stop by a Starbucks! They're donating 5¢ to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS in Africa for every hand-crafted beverage sold (meaning that it excludes ready-to-drink beverages and Ethos® Water), so basically any coffee or hot chocolate that they MAKE for you will be applicable! Do it!!

Argh! They're not SPIES!

>> November 12, 2009

Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Joshua Fattal

Ugh, I feel awful for these three American hikers. To be held in a foreign land, a land that has such a tumultuous past with the United States.. and to now be charged with espionage. ESPIONAGE?! Seriously Iran? You'd think, that perhaps, you'd have better things to mess around with Iran, not three innocent, young hikers. I mean, I used to think that perhaps the United States would always portray Iran in bad lighting, because they are so much different than us, right? And that maybe the government deserved a break, they weren't as bad as the Bush presidency wanted us to believe.. but after this Summer and their so-called "elections", I was so wrong. But I truly still believe that the citizens of Iran, are just like us. They may have a different culture, that's root is in a different predominant religion, but they are human beings, and you can't tell me that they think these hikers were spying. They were HIKING. Hiking! So, dear fabulous government of Iran, release the soldiers, now k? You would be "killing 2 birds with one stone," in that, perhaps you could improve the public's opinion of you, not only in the United States and the West, but Iranian citizens as well.

Do they look like spies? This video was filmed 2 days, TWO DAYS! before they were detained by Iran. :: sigh ::

Sigh.. Maybe Ahmadinejad thinks that he'll get a special meeting with President Clinton like crazy Kim Jong Il did.

(if you don't know what I'm talking about.. click here: Caught in the Middle, for my original post when the Hikers were arrested in the Summer, and for additional information see the Free the Hikers website here.)

I'm thinkin' I need a Free The Hikers T~shirt:

*and hell yes for the Twilight by Thriving Ivory song on the video. I love it! Keep
Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Joshua Fattal in your prayers.

Swine, Fawkes, Maine

>> November 5, 2009

  • I haven't written for awhile! Ugh. Too busy, too busy.. and NOW I have the Swine. Yes, you heard me, the Stupid Stinking Piggy H1N1 has hit my house. My brother got it first, then my mother and my sister, and now ME.. But at least it gave me a second to blog, right? I've been doing mostly everything on my phone lately. Checking facebook, and emails, reading a few blogs. But its SUPER hard to post a blog, or to comment on another person's blog on my phone.. so I really have been reading all your blogs, or at least... most of them, even when I wasn't commenting! I promise, after the swine has its time, I will be better.
  • Today is November 5th. And no, I'm not British. But I LOVE England.. and its crazy Holiday today. Today is Guy Fawkes Day! So we must remember, remember the 5th of November.. if none of you crazies know what I'm talking about, and I know PinkNic knows, because I borrowed her celebratory picture for Guy Fawkes Day, which hopefully doesn't make her crazy and go blow up Parliament. (that's what Guy and his friends attempted). I think that in my swineyness.. I'm going to watch V for Vendetta today. Since that's the only way for me to celebrate, in England they get fireworks and sparklers, and yummy food. Yeah.. not in Sandy Utah, but I love V for Vendetta.
  • So, back to the swine.. I don't get to go back to school, or work until November 12th! That's a week from today. WHAT am I going to do for a whole week?! I've been wishing for a "real day off", where I didn't have to go to school or work for a DAY. But now, I won't be making any money, which is just super pleasant.. I don't get to see any of my friends, at work, school, or anywhere else! Because naturally, I can't go ANYWHERE. And, everyone else is going to be in school, while I'm sitting on my ass at home falling behind. How cool is that? Not so much, yeah I agree.
  • On a Political Note: I am PISSED off at Maine. Why is it that people think its cool to choose hatred over any kind of love and equality?!? Just who are these crazy people, that I truly do not have any respect for?
  • OH and Phoenix was awesome.. I loved it. Pictures to come soon, probably in the next week, one of the days where I have more energy to go get my camera from downstairs and bring it back up here.

Caught in the Middle

>> August 9, 2009

Last week, when I heard that there were American hikers under Iranian custody, I got nervous. I'm still nervous. Isn't it sad the way that in these big International problems, somehow private citizens always get caught in the middle? I vote for former President Bill Clinton to go over and talk to Ahmadinejad about these hikers and getting them released. It worked with Kim Jong Il right? Speaking of which, the footage of Laura Ling and Euna Lee coming home, and seeing their families after so long, made me sob. Little Hana Lee would not let go of her mom. Good job Bill! I knew when I heard he was going to North Korea that he would be bringing the journalists home. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, click here for a slide show).

The following is the Huffington Post's article, released this morning, that the United States' government has confirmed that Iran does have the American's in custody. As if Iran/American relations couldn't get any more complicated..

.. Here's sending good vibes and prayers to Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Joshua Fattal.

Hikers In Iranian Custody, Government Confirms

| 08/ 9/09 09:36 AM | AP

WASHINGTON — The White House says Iran has confirmed it has three American hikers in custody.

The Americans strayed into Iran while hiking in the mountains of Kurdish territory in neighboring Iraq.

President Barack Obama's national security adviser, James Jones, said that as of Sunday morning, the Iranian government has confirmed it has them in custody.

U.S. and Kurdish officials say the Americans accidentally entered Iran across the poorly marked border on July 31.

Reports from Iran have said Tehran was looking into whether the three were spying for the United States. But until Jones' comment, there had not been any official Iranian government confirmation that the three were in custody.

Jones spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press."
