Ted Kennedy would be proud.

>> March 22, 2010

Today is a good day.
Today we have gotten just a little closer to where I think we should be.
Closer to a place where maybe this healthcare bill, can set us free.

If you don't know what I'm talking about...

I love this man.

A day for President's

>> February 15, 2010

Today is President's Day. And President Barack H Obama is my President, he's the first, and only President that I have ever really believed in. I voted for him twice, once to choose him to be the Democratic candidate, and once to choose him to become this nation's President. Is he perfect? Absolutely not. Has he done everything he needs to? Not yet.

Do I believe that he's doing the best he can, and that his heart is in the right place?

Most Definitely.

Happy President's Day, President Obama!

Oinked Out

>> November 11, 2009

Damn Pigs

I think I'm done with the Oink fest.

I'm still sore. And my ribs ACHE... and it wears me out to walk up stairs, but I'm not feeling too awful anymore. Oink-Oink-Oink.

Ugh.

I haven't left my house for a week. And it wasn't by choice! I mean.., it'd be nice to not go to school or work for a week and actually do something FUN (like U2.. that was fun.. did you see my pictures from a much happier week last month??) But to HAVE to stay home? That's so not exciting. I spent way too much time in bed, fooling around on Facebook, bored out of my mind. And yeah, more club crackers and sprite? NO thanks.

Plus..... now I have 2 projects due, next Friday, and I really need to get doing them..

So..

  • Any thoughts on Utah adoption policy?
  • or.. how about French Nursery Rhymes?
Happy Wednesday Everyone :D

.. and back to school and work I go

Also.. Happy Veteran's Day! No matter your political opinions and affiliations (and you know I have mine.. ), we should all take a minute today to acknowledge the sacrifices by the men and women in uniform. They. are. awesome. I could not do what they do!!

.. such crazy timing, with the whole Fort Hood Massacre. That was awful. I watched the CNN coverage of the Memorial Today. I thought President Obama did really well in his speech.

PS: Yay for the Anti-discrimination legislation that the Salt Lake City council passed last night. Yes, and wow for the LDS churches support for the Legislation. That's awesome. You'd almost think after the whole Prop 8 crap that they might not support it.

I love My President

>> June 5, 2009

I still have to pinch myself. The dude that I absolutely adore and respect, from his eloquent words to his awe-inspiring mind. He is truly inspirational.. I know, I know, I sound crazy, or maybe like some sort of stalker , but I still get amazed. I am so PROUD to have supported him for so long, and to truly support our President now. That man represents my country, and some may say that he shouldn't be "apologizing" to the Muslim world, but I say why not? I loved his speech yesterday in Cairo. It was amazing . If you want to read the full text of his speech, click here:

I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition.

~ President Barack Obama, University of Cairo, June 5th, 2009

Also.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DADDY!

This country is suffering from an empathy deficit. If you don't have it in you to be able to walk in another person's shoes, it's going to be difficult for us to move through these problems. What we need as a country is to start caring for one another in a very deep and fundamental way.

~ Michelle Obama
July 9, 2007

I have been reading a book of Michelle Obama quotes, and I love it. I really do admire her, and am proud that we have such a great role model for all women. She's awesome. The book is entitled Michelle Obama, In Her Own Words.

I'm getting a little behind in my Reading goals, click here for my full list.

I can't believe it.. and some Good Music!

>> May 27, 2009

This artwork is very important. I can't believe that it is even an issue, but there have been a few things this last week or so that I've said I can't believe it . Dalia Ziada writes an awesome piece about this very idea: closing Gitmo, and how it truly depicts the United States record on human rights, and how she (and I) are hoping President Obama doesn't mess this one up.

Another thing that I can't believe is the California Surpreme Court's ruling yesterday. They ruled to uphold Prop 8. I think Harvey Milk probably rolled over in his grave. Can you believe it? It made me want to scream when I read this. Its crazy how we tout all these different freedom sayings and beliefs, but when it truly comes down to it, do we really believe everyone is created equal? Ever since I got the news yesterday I have been posting this sign on my blog, you are more than welcome to take it to post as well.

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. Apparently there is only one Democratic Judge in the California Supreme Court. I still can't believe it though. It amazes me. I feel like my kids and grand kids will learn about this time in History, about a different Civil Rights Movement. I want to make sure I did all I could, and believed that everyone is equal, so the struggle will at least be over, and triumphant for my children and grandchildren to learn about. It amazes me. On a positive note, the court did rule that the 18,000 marriages that were performed while it was considered legal will be able to keep their marriages. At least that's a tiny step forward after a gigantic leap backwards. Right? I think this IReport video, from CNN is pretty interesting.

Another crazy thing I can't believe - Jon & Kate Plus 8! Did anyone watch it on Monday? It was so crazy! I feel so bad for those kids. I hope Jon & Kate can somehow come together and act a little bit better. Although, its obvious that Jon really hurt Kate, so I hope he can somehow make it up to her. Argh. So sad. (or is it sad that I care so much?) Oh well.

And last but not least. The Rack. is. laying. off. so. many. people. Its nuts! I was totally pissed that my hours were cut, and super offended that people were picked over me, but now its like at least I have a job! I walked in on a girl being laid off on Sunday, she was bawling. It sucks so bad. Half of our work force is going to be gone. And what I can't believe is usually retail jobs hire more people in the Summer / Fall time to get ready for Summer, Back to School and Christmas. Am I nuts to think that? I will be pissed if they just hire more people in August. It will be so backwards!

But on a happy note, I have been watching a lot of music videos in the morning lately, while I lift my weights. And I keep seeing this music video. I really like it! I love their Irish accents.

Three Cheers for President Obama

>> March 18, 2009

Major General J. Scott Gration a retired major general that visited the Darfur region of the Sudan with (then Senator) Obama in 2006, has now been appointed as the United States' special envoy to Sudan. Can everybody say yippee!?!? Remember how I discussed this in this post, about how I was excited George Clooney was pressuring President Obama into sending a special envoy to Darfur? Yep, well seems that the pressure worked - I'm glad I signed a few of those petitions. Not that I think it was just me and George.. but man, oh man, I'm excited. I know that it won't make everything better. And, everyone won't just wake up tomorrow and the world will be better. But I really think it is awesome, and a move in the right direction.

However.. it isn't all roses, and frankly Major General Gration has a lot of work ahead of him. Quoting from the Save Darfur Coalition:

The Sudanese government's recent decision to expel 13 international aid agencies has left about 1.1 million civilians without food aid, 1.5 million without health care and over a million without potable water—threatening starvation and disease on a massive scale.

General Gration has his work cut out for him. He will need to hit the ground running and spearhead an urgent and sustained diplomatic push to establish unimpeded humanitarian access in Darfur, as well as sustainable peace in all of Sudan. And we'll need your help again in the days and weeks to come.

But at least many people actually know where Darfur is. (at least they can say Africa.. right?) I remember wearing my Save Darfur t-shirt way back when people would stare at me and be like "Who's Darfur?"

In other Obamaness, the Obama administration also announced today that they are going to start phasing out stop losses. This also makes me very happy. Stop losses are the military practice of holding troops past end of enlistments. According to the Defense Secretary, the military will now be using more incentive-based programs if enlistments need to be extended.

My last cheer for President Obama is his funny-ness. Among a big Senator Dodd / AIG / Stupid bonuses scandal, where many are pushing for Secretary Timothy Geitner to step down, the President instead was full of humor and jokes at the California Town Hall Meeting tonight. Yay for President Obama. His administration isn't perfect... but I think he's doing AWESOME in the things that count.

PS! Obama is going to be on Jay Leno tomorrow night. In case any of you are interested.

Random Babble

>> February 26, 2009

i was going to post yesterday, but i've been feeling sick, and been busy, and just didn't get to it, so now i feel like i'm bursting with things to say and don't know where to start. first off yahoo for my first day at nordstrom rack today. the orientation today was fun. i really enjoyed it actually, for an orientation of course. they seem so much more together than macys ever was, and that. is. awesome. they also have benefits! i haven't looked to see exactly how much $$ they are yet, but at least they are available. i have medical right now, but i would like some dental and vision insurance. sigh. and they have 401k stuff.. and profit sharing. yeah, they have a real benefit package . amazing i know. haven't seen that in awhile. oh! and THE best benefit of all: 20% off at nordstrom cafe. enough said. if you dont quite understand see here to hear about my absolute excitement over my nordstrom discount.

speaking of money, i got my tax refund today ~ at least federal that is. yay. not that i get to spend most of it on fun things, but man oh man it will be nice to have a little extra money. like today, i had wendys and i had cafe rio with friends last night. even being able to buy those two things makes me happier again. sad. but. true.

our dear president obama spoke two nights ago. i love him. i really do. my favorite part - among many - was near the beginning when he introduced his wife to the audience, and she mouthed back "love you," they are like the perfect couple and i love it. i mean.. usually all we can hope for is a good president in office, but president barack hussein obama is not only a great president but an awesome husband and father. yup. i love it.

i think that the budget is all together good. obviously, there are a lot of aspects to it, and some things i don't even completely understand. but, i think its great that the three top things that were highlited for the speech are education, health care, and the economy. those big three things are truly interrelated, and really will help this country in the long run. there are other things i really don't like, and i hope that we can solve them somehow. like, there will still be a budget deficit in 2012. i am hoping in the finalized budget proposal - due in april - there will be more avenues involved where we can make up that negative balance. but, at the same time, we are in a recession, and our country is fighting two wars. i truly believe that some things are vital. health care. the economy. education. and making sure our service men and women are protected, and that the world is safer is one of those things. especially when we're already in afghanistan and iraq. unfortunately sometimes you have to fix some dumb texan dude's mistakes.

george clooney is coming back to er for the season finale. i am excited. that. is. for. sure. but i am also happy and excited because he was asking congress this week for a special envoy to darfur. i hope it really happens. that would sure make me happy. we really need to do something... according to the un 12,000 people have had to flee southern darfur today. see here for more info.

yay for george clooney. i don't think i ever would have thought he would be so awesome when i first saw him as dr doug ross. haha.

so i have to wait awhile to see dr ross return, but at least i get to watch carter (noah wyle) on er tonight. and american idol. yay for thursdays.

ps~ capitalization is way overrated today.

Fests, Parades, Inaugurations, and Friends

>> January 24, 2009

This past week has been busy, and fun.

Last Friday, The University of Utah football team had a Championship Parade in downtown Salt Lake. For anyone who doesn't know, the Utes won the Sugar Bowl Championship in New Orleans on January 2nd, where they beat Alabama 31 to 17 in a fabulous game. It was awesome! This brought them to an even more awesome record of a 13-0 season. So of course we had to celebrate. My little brother really likes sports and watched the Utes very closely this season, so I convinced my mom to let me check him out early from school and we headed down to the Parade. We rode trax, and saw some quite interesting people on our way down, and even crazier people on the way home. It was a lot of fun.

Tim and Me bored on Trax

Tuesday, was my favorite day of the week, and perhaps my favorite day of the Year. I was so excited for Barack Obama, you'd think I personally knew him. Two out of three of my classes that day were canceled, so I decided to skip French and stay home. How could I miss the Inauguration? I was practically glued to the TV. for hours.

On Wednesday, my sister Ashley and I decided that it was just ludicrous that being Utah natives we had never been to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, and drove up for the afternoon. We got there right after my classes were over, around noon. At first, it was kind of boring, not much going on. So we looked at the map and festival pamphlet that they give you and tried to decide on a movie to go see. We chose Crude. But we had a few hours to kill so we wandered Main Street, hoping to see some celebrities or something exciting. We walked down to the Music Cafe and listened to Angel Taylor, I really liked her. Apparently she's the next Colbie Caillat. She was pretty funny too. We sat on the bench, and I saw some guys with tight pants and interesting hair and said "Look it's the Jonas Brothers!" Totally kidding. Then we heard them sing.. and liked it. Their name is Locksley, we really liked them as well. Minus the tight emo pants.

I should be a Celebrity

"The Twins" : Me and Ashley

After Locksley, we wandered some more and took some pictures of ourselves. Some weird guy walked by us and yelled all highpitched "Sir! Don't take pictures of me" like he wanted everyone to think he was famous or something. We were pretty sure he wasn't, and thought that he was just stupid. I saw him at Target yesterday. Working. The lady with him asked my sister and I if we were twins; and later took our picture, saying she "had to have a picture of the twins," Crazy people.

Walking back up the street, some guy said that if we wanted to see someone to take pictures of, Chris Rock was up by the O.C. Tanner Rolex Lounge. So we went up there. We never saw Chris Rock, but we saw some other famous people. One guy, Mike Burton was there, these other girls acted like he was famous, and he looked important since he was being followed around by a camera man and all. But, we're still not sure exactly who he was. We then saw Anthony Edwards and Minnie Driver come out of the Lounge. That was awesome! I really like Anthony Edwards when he was on ER, and on an alltime classic, Top Gun. He actually allowed for people to take a lot of pictures, Minnie kind of just ran away so we just got the back of her head.

Anthony Edwards

Minnie Driver
(She's the one with the black hat and brown curly hair, running away)

Adrian Grenier??

After our Celebrity encounters, we wanted more... we heard that Burt Reynolds was inside the Lounge, but never saw him come out. Sadness. And we saw a guy that could be Adrian Grenier, but probably isn't. We can dream though right? After all of our Celebrity sightings, it was too late to get on the waitlist for the movie, and we were starving so we headed to Taco Bell and called it a day. Next year we are determined to plan more, and buy tickets ahead of time. We might just have a career with the Paparazzi.

One regret I do have, is not knowing about a film that was at Sundance, that I was unable to see just because it was played on days that I had to do more responsible things, like work or go to school. It's called, The Reckoning. It is about the International Criminal Court. It was nominated for an award though, so hopefully it will get it and I can see it when it comes out on DVD. ~~ crossing fingers ~~

Friday, I went to Applebees with longtime high school friends: Alisha, Jihyei and Suzanne. That was a lot of fun. It had been a long time since I had seen Suzanne, and at least 6 months since I had seen Jihyei, so it was fun to catch up. Hopefully the next time we see each other won't be quite that spread out. We decided that someone really just needs to say "We are meeting here at this time, on this day, hope you can be there," instead of creating long email threads of complaints and opinions on where we should go and when. Much easier when it's simpler.
Suzanne, Alisha, Me, Jihyei

All in all it was a good week. Guess I should go do some homework now.

24 Things

>> December 23, 2008

I decided, that I am a list person. And, now that I have been 25 for one week, I have decided that 24 was a good year, and before I get too old
and senile, I am going to write a list of things I accomplished when I was 24.

So here we go.. 24 Things I did when I was 24 - in no particular order of course.

  1. I started this AWESOME blog.
  2. I then got addicted to writing this here blog.
  3. I learned how to properly fold Macy's textiles - very important.
  4. I got snowed on in JUNE.
  5. Became VERY obsessed with Barack Obama
  6. I almost crashed on a plane while landing in Amsterdam, in The Netherlands.
  7. I moved back in with the parentals - and started sharing a room with my sister!
  8. I saw LOTS of aminals at Yellowstone.
  9. I got hit on by a German-Italian waiter in Berlin - who then gave us free Fanta.
  10. Got mocked by a Turkish-German man in Potsdam - who then gave me a free Döner.
  11. Planned to move out of the country..
  12. Then fled from a Crazy Germany family - on a train - by myself.
  13. Realized how much I truly need people to remain sane.

  15. I was involved in planning a huge literary event.
  16. I dressed as my true self for Halloween - A HIPPY!

  18. Voted for David Cook at least a thousand times. Yahoo!
  19. Was BITTEN by the Twilight Saga
  20. And was then pissed off and disappointed by Breaking Dawn.
  21. I visited Lagoon three times
  22. Listened to former-President George H.W. Bush and German Chancellor Angela Merkel speak at the re-dedication of the U.S. embassy in Berlin - on July 4, 2008.
  23. Worked a long 15 hour day at a poll center on Election Day.
  24. Plugged along in school - even when I wanted to strangle my Grant Writing professor.

This is My December..

>> December 1, 2008

Today, is World AIDS Day. It is the 20th Annual World AIDS Day, and fortunately, we are getting very close to a solution to the problem.. bringing more and more awareness and light to this cruel disease of HIV-AIDS. I think it's sad some of the stories you hear, about children, and adults alike, being ridiculed and prejudiced against because they have this disease. I hope that this can stop, and even more than that I hope that we won't have to celebrate the "40th Annual World AIDS Day" because there no longer will be AIDS. There is one thing I like about President Bush, I love his PEPFAR Initiative. It's really helped Africa, I wish that it could help more.. and further..I think the saddest part is that around the world, 2.7 million people were infected with HIV in 2007 alone, and there is a staggering 33 million people around the world living with HIV. 33 MILLION! That doesn't have to happen. Now that we know the causes, we know the risks, and we know how to slow down the process of the disease. Visit the World AIDS Campaign website here for more information.

In other happier thoughts, I love that it's December 1st. It doesn't feel like it. It hasn't really snowed much in Salt Lake, which is both good and bad. I HATE being cold! And I HATE the snow.. BRRRR! But I do love December for other reasons. Like, of course Christmas music, Christmas lights, Christmas Shopping and the cheesy Christmas movies on TV. I really like the classics, the Santa Claus is Comin' To Town movie with Frank Sinatra narrating, and Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer with it's old school graphics. And who doesn't like a little It's a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street? But I think I have to say one of my very favorite parts about Christmas and December is the food. Thanksgiving's great in its own right, but it doesn't compare to Christmas. I love making sugar cookies, and the smell of Gingerbread, or yummy buttery rolls. That's the best. Speaking of which, this is what I want for Christmas:

The Cookie Master Plus

You get 12 metal discs in different fun shapes, accent tips for decorating and filling the cookies and recipe booklets! I want it! I want it! I saw it at Joann's Crafts, but I also just found it on this website. <~ hint~hint~>

In other Babble of the day.. I'm a big babbler, I have so many thoughts! haha. To sum 'em up:

  • Israel sucks: I don't understand why they can't just let the food get into Gaza, I'm not sure I care if they can't get along, but everyone deserves to eat!! AND the part that bothers me more is that NO ONE is saying anything about it. Like it's OK for Israel to just decide that. I'm sure someone would have something to say if President Bush all of a sudden decided to cut off all of California to any food or supplies.

  • YAY for Obama's National Security Cabinet!! I am most excited about Hillary Clinton, for sure. But I am excited that they are all part of such a "muscular" team, as Candy Crowley on CNN put it this morning. They all know what they're doing, they're all opinionated and smart enough, where the cabinet will be full of many ideas and various opinions, and I love that. I think that will make it work the best!! Seriously.

  • Mumbai.. was awful. I'm very sad about it. :( and a little nervous. I don't really understand all of the facts, I don't think anyone does quite yet. I just heard that the Taj Hotel had already been aware that an attack might be imminent.. and that they were trying to put up more security. But I also heard that they were trying to kill at least 5,000 people. So I guess in a way, we can be grateful that that didn't happen. EEEK!

  • And last but not least.. I just have a pet peeve that I am going to keep short and sweet and not rattle on about. But, if you say you're going to do something.. DO IT. I am SICK of flaky people!!

This is My December.. <~ insert Linkin Park lyrics ~>

Good News.. Vampires & The Clintons

>> November 22, 2008

I just saw Twilight. And, after Breaking Dawn sorta ruined the series for me, I was leery about the movie. However, I tried to go in with an open mind and enjoy the movie. Since I had enjoyed the original first book so much. I liked it. Parts were cheesy.. but parts of the book were cheesy. I did like the way the characters were portrayed, and I liked that some of the lines from the book were read verbatim during the movie. Altogether it was good, just not fantastic. And, it was fun to see the Harry Potter trailer again, even though I have it pretty much memoried. I still would have chosen Harry over Edward, but for now I guess Edward will do.

In other weekend news.. I am excited that Hillary Clinton will be the next Secretary of State in the Obama administration. I love that we can have a President~Elect that can get past the petty crap that happened during the Democratic Primaries, and really pick the best person for the job. Don't get me wrong, I also really like Bill Richardson. But, I think that he will be better in a different position, but I'll be smiling pretty big when Governor Richardson, Senator Clinton, and my fav President~Elect Obama are all on the same team in the White House. I'm thinking it's going to be a great administation. Go Team Obama! ;) haha.

Nelson Mandela's letter

>> November 8, 2008

Nelson Mandela sent a letter to congratulate President-elect Barack Obama. Here is the full text, from The New York Times. My favorite part is when he says that Obama's victory shows that anyone, anywhere "should not dare to dream of wanting to change the world for a better place."

Dear Senator Obama,

We join people in your country and around the world in congratulating you on becoming the President-Elect of the United States. Your victory has demonstrated that no person anywhere in the world should not dare to dream of wanting to change the world for a better place.
We note and applaud your commitment to supporting the cause of peace and security around the world. We trust that you will also make it the mission of your Presidency to combat the scourge of poverty and disease everywhere.
We wish you strength and fortitude in the challenging days and years that lie ahead. We are sure you will ultimately achieve your dream making the United States of America a full partner in a community of nations committed to peace and prosperity for all.

Sincerely,
N R Mandela

VICTORY FOR OBAMA!!

Yay for President-elect Barack Obama!
I still feel like I need to pinch myself. I can't believe it. I am so happy!!

"They understood his vision of a fairer and more just America
and embraced it. They heard his call for a new generation of Americans to
participate in government and were inspired. They believed that change is
possible and voted to be part of America's future," ~ Senator Ted Kennedy

They also showed Dr. King's daughter, Bernice, last night on CNN. When I see her, and think of her father's "I have a dream" speech, made less than half a century ago, it almost makes me cry. I think it is awesome that Martin Luther King Jr's children really did see the day where the American dream truly opened up to African-Americans more.

Nevertheless, don't get me wrong. I did not vote for him to be MY President because he is black. I voted for him because I believe in him, I believe in his ability to bring people together, I believe in his ability for change, and I agree with him on his policies. I agree with him, and believe in him, and oh yeah, he just happens to be black. He IS the change the country needs! Boy, it's going to feel strange having a president I actually like and respect. Only 76 more days America!

It was also a big night for Democrats across the country. The Democrats in the House of Representatives also clinched the biggest majority they've had in the House in 15 years!

I am proud to be a Democrat. But mostly, I am proud to be part of an American that can look beyond prejudice, and racism and choose the right (left!) man for the job. Congratulations President-elect Obama!
