What's YOUR OPINION?

>> February 28, 2009

I would like to start a new discussion-type category on my blog, where I talk about what I think... and then you tell me what you think. Heh. For this to work, obviously my readers YOU would have to really reply and tell me what you think. So let's give it a try..

As I was doing homework for my POLI SCI class last night I had to contemplate the following question:

Is the death penalty a cruel and unusual punishment?
This was my answer:
I hate this question!

I am never sure on my answer, so I'm going to just explain why I go back and forth on the issue. My initial answer is yes, it is cruel and unusual, and to me in my personal ethics I don't think it is our right to choose who lives, and who dies.

BUT at the same time, then I actually hear about certain crimes. Crimes that should be punishable by death.. because they are so heinous. Especially crimes against children. Or against masses and masses of people.. or crimes that are fully planned, and yeah. I don't know! Then I would say no, it's not that cruel and unusual, because they were cruel and unusual initially.

My last thought is that it is so expensive to keep these people that committed these awful crimes in prison. It drains the countries assets, and for what? So they can have good food and go to school for free? While I slave away at crappy retail jobs to pay for my higher education?

Yeah. It is a toss up for me.

Sooo.. What do you think? WHAT'S YOUR OPINION?

Obsessions

A few of my current Obsessions ~

I love taking pictures of the sky.. especially funky clouds. I wish I could afford to buy a new camera. I really want this one here, the Sony Cybershot W170 10.1 MP in red. It makes my mouth water.

Anderson Cooper.. Did anyone see his attempt at chopping onions when he filled in for Regis on Regis and Kelly on Thursday? It. was. hilarious. I tried to find a video of it, but haven't found one yet. Darn. It was good though. He obviously doesn't cook. But why would he need to?

I am obsessed with Anderson though. It might be considered sad by some people. Although I do have a fellow blogger friend that loves Brian Williams, so maybe it isn't all that odd and unusual. Right?? haha. I like being well-informed, and listening to the news.. and I would just much rather get my news from a place I trust: CNN.. and it just helps that a nice, smart, fun-to-look-at man is on TV doing just that every night. ;)

I am also obsessed with playing Wii. I have taken my wii fitness test every day all of February, minus 2 days. Today I am 25, and 29. I have two "miis" one named Nicole, the other named Nikki. Haha. Not that I feel I am two different people or anything like that, even though I am equally known by both names. I just like to be able to take two fitness tests each day. haha. Oh man. I am getting much better at it though. A few weeks ago my age was 80! * for crazies that don't know about the wii sports fitness test, it tests your abilities by having you do 3 different training activities, and then gives you an age. The lowest being 20, the highest being 80. The lower your age, the better you are. You can only do it once a day, and it charts your progress*

3 Days until U2s' No Line on the Horizon Album!!

i was going to post yesterday, but i've been feeling sick, and been busy, and just didn't get to it, so now i feel like i'm bursting with things to say and don't know where to start. first off yahoo for my first day at nordstrom rack today. the orientation today was fun. i really enjoyed it actually, for an orientation of course. they seem so much more together than macys ever was, and that. is. awesome. they also have benefits! i haven't looked to see exactly how much $$ they are yet, but at least they are available. i have medical right now, but i would like some dental and vision insurance. sigh. and they have 401k stuff.. and profit sharing. yeah, they have a real benefit package . amazing i know. haven't seen that in awhile. oh! and THE best benefit of all: 20% off at nordstrom cafe. enough said. if you dont quite understand see here to hear about my absolute excitement over my nordstrom discount.

speaking of money, i got my tax refund today ~ at least federal that is. yay. not that i get to spend most of it on fun things, but man oh man it will be nice to have a little extra money. like today, i had wendys and i had cafe rio with friends last night. even being able to buy those two things makes me happier again. sad. but. true.

our dear president obama spoke two nights ago. i love him. i really do. my favorite part - among many - was near the beginning when he introduced his wife to the audience, and she mouthed back "love you," they are like the perfect couple and i love it. i mean.. usually all we can hope for is a good president in office, but president barack hussein obama is not only a great president but an awesome husband and father. yup. i love it.

i think that the budget is all together good. obviously, there are a lot of aspects to it, and some things i don't even completely understand. but, i think its great that the three top things that were highlited for the speech are education, health care, and the economy. those big three things are truly interrelated, and really will help this country in the long run. there are other things i really don't like, and i hope that we can solve them somehow. like, there will still be a budget deficit in 2012. i am hoping in the finalized budget proposal - due in april - there will be more avenues involved where we can make up that negative balance. but, at the same time, we are in a recession, and our country is fighting two wars. i truly believe that some things are vital. health care. the economy. education. and making sure our service men and women are protected, and that the world is safer is one of those things. especially when we're already in afghanistan and iraq. unfortunately sometimes you have to fix some dumb texan dude's mistakes.

george clooney is coming back to er for the season finale. i am excited. that. is. for. sure. but i am also happy and excited because he was asking congress this week for a special envoy to darfur. i hope it really happens. that would sure make me happy. we really need to do something... according to the un 12,000 people have had to flee southern darfur today. see here for more info.

yay for george clooney. i don't think i ever would have thought he would be so awesome when i first saw him as dr doug ross. haha.

so i have to wait awhile to see dr ross return, but at least i get to watch carter (noah wyle) on er tonight. and american idol. yay for thursdays.

ps~ capitalization is way overrated today.

Let the Good Times Roll!

I love New Orleans. My sister and I visited the Crescent City in January 2007, and it was absolutely awesome. The French Quarter is the best. And, at that time - and even now - the city was still recovering form Hurricane Katrina. However, there was much hope and fun in the air. Our taxi driver told us to let everyone back home know that, "New Orleans is back." Nawlins is coming back, see this article here. They are expected to have much bigger turn out this year, bigger than they've had since Katrina in 2005. I am excited for this great city. And a little amazed that they are able to do that in this recession. Yay for New Orleans! I want to go back.. it is definitely another one of those places on my travel wish list.

Here's a slide show of mine and Ashley's 2007 Trip to Nawlins:

New Orleans is my essence, my soul, my muse, and I can only dream that one day she will recapture her glory. I will do everything within my power to make that happen and to help in any way I can to ease the suffering of my city, my people! ~ Harry Connick, Jr

I've seen 119 out of 239 films

>> February 23, 2009

I like movies, and some movies, I definitely love so when my blogger friend Marg, posted this survey of what movies you have / haven't seen, I had to participate. So here it is. Guess since I've seen 119, that means I have no life. But at least I've seen some Good Movies, right? haha. How many have YOU seen?

SUPPOSEDLY if you've seen over 85 films, you have no life. Mark the ones you've seen. There are 239 films on this list. Copy this list, go to your own blog, paste this as a post. Then, put x's next to the films you've seen, add them up, and change the header adding your number. Have fun.

the blahs and the Oscars

>> February 22, 2009

This is how I feel about Mondays...

...and the freezing rain forecast for the morning, doesn't help.

I did enjoy the Oscars though. Hugh Jackman's performance at the beginning was really good. I love his singing and dancing performances. He's so talented! He reminds me of the "good ol' day" actors of the 40's.

I was proud of Sean Penn for saying something about Proposition 8. Because, that issue, isn't really going to go away. I hope it is back on the ballot this November. What he said is true, it is one of those things, that future generations will look at our generation as the bigoted, crazy one. Much like I think of the South in the 1960's. Yuck.

I was a little sad that Brad Pitt and Benjamin Button didn't win, but I've heard that Slumdog Millionaire really deserved the Best Picture win. I'll have to see it now. I can't believe I haven't yet! It has just been one of those things on my To Do List.

All in all it was a good show. Yay Oscars. :)

Happy Monday tomorrow everyone ~ hope the weather is better where you are, seems my wish for Spring yesterday sure didn't last too long.

Spring

>> February 21, 2009

It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so! ~Mark Twain

Fall is my favorite season. But Spring comes in a close second place. I love when winter goes away! I am not a big fan of winter that is for sure. Yuck. And today, it is so nice! I hope it stays this way and we don't have to have any more winter, but as Utah weather usually goes, it will be snowing in a few days.

And I really don't have patience.. Especially for things I hate, like snow, coldness, frigid wind. Yuck! I do love rain though, so I'm okay with some great thunderstorms coming my way, just no more snow.

In other babbles, Ashley R., my blogging friend has given me a blogging award, the Cute's Blogger Award. Thanks Ashley!

The Future Needs a Big Kiss...

>> February 20, 2009

  • Noah Wyle was on ER last night. That makes me happy. I am not happy however that the episode ended with him being on dialysis! If they kill Dr John Carter.. so help me..
  • Speaking of killing doctors. Have you heard that Katherine Heigl and T R Knight have been booted off Grey's Anatomy?? Katherine Heigl's character, Izzie Stephens has been my favorite since the beginning. The rumor is that they're going to kill her off, and with the way the story line's going.. Eek! I've loved Katherine Heigl ever since her movie, My Father the Hero, and I loved her on Roswell. But, she is in a new movie, The Ugly Truth, with Gerard Butler, so maybe it'll be good.
  • American Idol: all I have to say is: Yay. Danny. Gokey! and hallelujah Tatiana is gone. Yuck. AND I have to say, what's up with Paula's face? Her face is all weird.. all old lady, over tanned looking. Crazy. Or, maybe her makeup is just weird. I don't know.
  • In other non TV news.. I am counting down until U2's New Album, No Line on the Horizon comes out. March 3rd. I like the new Breathe song and Moment of Surrender might be my new favorite song... You can listen to them on Myspace, click here. The title of this post comes from a line in the Get on your Boots song, that U2 performed at the Grammy's.
  • Papa Roach also has an album coming out on March 24th. Yay! To listen to their single, Lifeline, click here. Thanks for telling me Ash! I like it. But I think scars, is my all time favorite song of theirs.
  • They are now having a French minor at UVU. I think I might do it. We will see. We will see. Too bad I can't go on the French study abroad in Nice and Paris this summer. I am so jealous - and it really would help me get a lot more credits. Sigh. I hate money!
  • I don't get to work at Macy's anymore. Not that I really wanted to.. but now I am not allowed. Ha. I got the job at Nordstrom Rack, and after they called to verify my employment with Macy's, the retarded human resources lady at Macy's called to tell me it would be a conflict of interest if I worked for both. I was going to quit anyway, but I just think it's lame. But I have issues with Macy's anyway. Yucks.
  • Last but not least, Yay for the Oscars this weekend!! I am excited. I still haven't seen all the movies, so that's crappy, but I really loved Benjamin Button, and I LOVE Brad Pitt anyways, so there ya go.
Happy Friday!

The Ebony Experiment?!

>> February 19, 2009

This is another one of those news stories where I am like Say What?!?? I don't understand this. I really truly think that it will bring about the wrong kind of change. This family, the Andersons, an African-American family living in Chicago, have decided that they are only going to buy from black merchants, and only black made products, for the year 2009. They are calling it The Ebony Experiment . I think that this is crazy. It's like reversing the civil rights movement. Discrimination is discrimination, no matter your color or ethnicity.

See the article here, Their year of buying black, from the Chicago Sun Times.

I swear the country was past thinking like this...

I really believe that it is a very bad idea. That it will only bring about more discrimination and bad feelings, rather than good. Right now, everyone is having a hard time, not just the African American community. It so reminds me of the Germans not wanting to buy from Jewish shopkeepers pre-World War 2. What happens when the white Americans want to buy white-only products from only white store owners??

The divide of race has been America's constant curse. Each new wave of immigrants gives new targets to old prejudices. Prejudice and contempt, cloaked in the pretense of religious or political conviction, are no different. They have nearly destroyed us in the past. They plague us still. They fuel the fanaticism of terror. They torment the lives of millions in fractured nations around the world. These obsessions cripple both those who are hated and, of course, those who hate, robbing both of what they might become.

LONDON

Oh how I miss thee..

I have to go back to London. It has been by far my most favoritest city in the entire world. So how could I not include it in my Travel Wishlists? Sigh.. if only I were rich, and could pay for a nice British flat each summer.

Best things about London:
  • RAIN - I love the rain, I know I know some people hate it. But I love the sound of it.. the freshness in the air, the funky clouds over the island and the green green grass.
  • The Tube - Another thing people love to hate.. but I really loved it. I love the community feel of it, in such a big city. Mind The Gap
  • Big Ben - best man of all time, hands down. I literally skipped down the street the first time I saw the big ol' clock.
  • The History - I love history.. and I love all of the museums, and historical buildings!
  • The Pomp and Circumstance - along with the Royal family's pictures always being on the front page of trashy magazines. haha. Love it.
  • The Accents - make. me. swoon.
  • The Shopping: Especially Covent Garden!!
  • Cornish Pasties!!
  • Crepes and fresh squeezed orange juice, right by big ben. YUM
You find no man (or woman), at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."

I LUV my Grandma

>> February 17, 2009

Tonight, after Ashley got off work we went over to visit with my Grandma Jean. She is doing a lot better, and has been home from the Nursing Home for a few weeks. I had the flu last week, so didn't get to spend a lot of time with her yet - the last thing she needed was to get the flu from me. But tonight.. she was hilarious. She was almost PUNCHY. Yes, my Grandma. Seemed. Punchy. She was giggly and telling stories about 500 pound chimpanzee, and Giraffes with purple tongues. She fed me Macadamia Nut chocolates, and then made me laugh so hard my stomach still hurts now.

I love my Grandma. Seeing her in that Nursing home made me sad, I hated going up there because I really didn't feel like she belonged there. I cried about it more than once. Yuck. But I am so excited that she is home now, and yes, she needs extra help, and yes she will for forever now, but it makes me really happy to see her in her own home, doing her own thing. I was also really excited tonight to see her so happy and giggly, she could be depressed and unhappy, having to go see so many doctors, and having nurses and physical and occupational therapists coming into her home all the time. But, she's not. She's the Giggly Crazy Grandma she's always been. I love you Grandma Jeaner.

What price would you pay for Peace?

>> February 16, 2009

If anyone had been watching me as I watched the news this afternoon, you might have seen smoke fuming from my ears, or my eyes bulging out of my head: I was so angry. This is the headline I saw: Pakistani government does deal with Taliban on sharia law. I wanted to scream WHAT?! back at CNN's Campbell Brown (although I do know that she wouldn't hear me). It still makes me so mad.

First let me explain a little about Sharia law, I got the following information from this website:

Sharia Law - source and definitions:

The term "Sharia" (a.k.a. Shari'a) literally means "the path to a watering hole." The Guardian newspaper in the UK describes Sharia as: "... a religious code for living, in the same way that the Bible offers a moral system for Christians."

Within Sharia law, there are a group of "Haram" offenses which carry severe punishments. These include pre-marital sexual intercourse, sex by divorced persons, post-marital sex, adultery, false accusation of unlawful intercourse, drinking alcohol, theft, and highway robbery. Haram sexual offenses can carry a sentence of stoning to death or severe flogging. An eyewitness account of Soraya M, a woman executed by stoning, can be read on an anti-Iranian web site. Caution: do not read this if you have a weak stomach; it is quite graphic.

London's, The Independent ran an article today about the Pakistani Sharia Law entitled, Sharia law is the price of peace in Pakistan. The price for peace?? I'm not sure I think that Sharia law is a "good price" for peace. Who does this really help?? Does it really outweigh who it hurts?

This so called deal occurred in the North West Frontier Province (aka as SWAT: South Waziristan), where the Taliban have been terrorizing the area, with beheadings, rapes, and out right violence - mostly targeting women, notably girls' schools. I can see how you would want to stop that violence. Stop that terror. No one deserves to live like that. However, isn't anyone reminded of what happened in Afghanistan? I remember when the Taliban was just a group that needed to be appeased in Afghanistan. That didn't exactly end well. And lest we've forgotten, North West Frontier Province, SWAT, oh yeah, that's the province with the sketchy border with Afghanistan. That place that former President Musharraf basically handed over to the Taliban in the area. Isn't that nice?

From the CNN article, this Pakistani professor, Khamid Hussain, makes a good point:

Khadim Hussain, a professor Bahria University in Islamabad who studies Pakistani politics, said the government has effectively surrendered the areas to the Taliban, thereby setting the stage for two contradictory, parallel states in North West Frontier Province.

"If you leave them like that and you give ... a semblance of peace in a particular area, what does that mean?" Hussain said. "It means you're capitulating. It means you're surrendering the state to them. It means your submitting the state authority to them because they are running a parallel state."

He said the government's decision amounts to a marriage of convenience made under duress.
And of course this all happens when President Obama's envoy to the region, Richard Holbrooke, is on his way to Pakistan - he's currently in India. That couldn't be just a simple coincidence. Could it?

Modern countries currently practicing varying forms of Sharia Law:
  • India: has a dual system, with both secular and religious courts
  • The Philippines: also has a dual system of secular and religious courts
  • Saudi Arabia: Religious Police
  • Iran: Religious Police
  • Libya: National laws predominantly influenced by Sharia
  • Sudan*: National laws predominantly influenced by Sharia
  • Nigeria: has newly reintroduced harsh punishments, such as:
    • amputations of one or both hands for theft
    • stoning for adultery and apostasy
* like I needed another reason to hate the Sudanese government. (see here)

Sharia Law is considered barbaric and cruel by the European Court of Human Rights. But sure, the U.S. will still be allies with Pakistan. Giving them money. Weapons. Anything else you'd like? I mean, I am all for keeping the diplomacy door open, but this just makes me want to hurl. Yuck.

One last thing, see this blog: http://womenagainstshariah.blogspot.com/ for an interesting read.

He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.

The Good Ol' Days

>> February 15, 2009

Today I was thinking and talking to Ashley about how I can't wink, and I remembered how at Frog and Toads Preschool, when I was probably 4 or 5, I was obsessed with trying to wink. After we were done eating lunch, we had to wait to be excused, to go take our naps or watch TV. While I sat there, waiting for a teacher to let me leave the tables I would try to wink, by placing my hand over one of my eyes and holding it down. I would look at my friend (who I cannot remember her name now.. sad!) and ask if I was winking. Sometimes she would reply yes, sometimes no. But I never really let go of my eye, I would continue holding it down. Because, sadly, if I let go, my eye would pop right back up. Still, to this day, I can't wink. I can kind of bring my chubby cheeks UP to my eye, to cover it up some, and almost get a wink. Nevertheless, I have never - nor will I ever - truly wink.

Another one of those crazy memories.. During my last few years of Elementary school, my sister and I were home alone a lot. Either before/after school or during the three weeks we were off track. We did some crazy things. Sometimes we would watch music videos like Matchbox Twenty's PUSH, and PUSH each other down each time Rob Thomas sang the word "push," or we would make up games where you couldn't touch the ground or you'd be eaten by sharks, or some ocean animal, so we had to lay pillows down on the ground and jump from pillow to pillow to be saved. We washed and dried those big decorative pillows once, they were never the same since - they got all bunchy and full of lumps.

We also had an obsession with Blue's Clues, singing the songs and everything- yes, I said I was probably about 11 or 12. I know, I know, embarrassing. ** Here's the mail, it never fails. It makes me want to wag my tail. When it comes I want to wail - "MAAAAAAAAAIIIIIL" **

Ever since I saw this episode of Anthony Bourdain I have wanted to visit Ghana. I love the rain forests, and the beach coastline, as well as the many animals.

Ghana

So much history, but not as much bloodshed and sadness as in other African nations. Love it.
