Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain est super!

>> November 27, 2009

Amélie, is an awesome movie! I really liked it. I have only seen a few French movies in my life, and I can't even remember what the first one was called, so that's super interesting eh? But the one I saw last year, in my French class, and Amélie remind me of each other. Not that its just that they were in French, or that they were about the same topics - because they weren't, but it's just the different film style. Must be French. ;) I really like it. Its different than American movies, its funny, but not in an obvious way, and Amélie is cute and romantic, but not cheesy (unlike that other, very American, vampire movie I saw the other day.. )

The French title: Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain means "The fabulous destiny of Amélie Poulain" (Poulain is just her last name), and it goes through and tells the story of a not so ordinary French girl, Amélie, that is basically sheltered and not allowed to see other children, her mother ends up dying when she's small, and then her father is a French Army Vet that's quite crazy.

She ends up going on a "do good mission," and eventually finds a man she falls in love with. Its cute.. I likes it. You should watch it. Even if you don't speak any français.

Countdown to Turkey Time

>> November 25, 2009

I am a big Holiday person. I like each holiday for different reasons.. and when people try to get me to choose my favorite, I end up saying "Christmas" because its true, December IS the best time of year.. I love the foods, the smells, the lights, the cheesy Christmas movies, a few Christmas songs, and the decorations.

However, I get a little annoyed at Christmas each year. Because it just keeps coming sooner and sooner! On ABC Family they have their "25 days of Christmas" each December, from December 1st until the Big Day. This year I've noticed they have a COUNTDOWN to the 25 days of Christmas! What?! There's already been some Christmas movies on, and I'm like, what? I'm confused. I truly believe that Christmas shouldn't start until after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a Holiday too!!

So.. I decided to write a blog about Thanksgiving, and found this funny poem..
(Let's not discuss what many of us, including me, are thinking after we read this: No wonder America's fat!)

Belly Stuffer
Thanksgiving brings a terrible chore,
'Cause I’m forced to eat and eat some more.
If I don’t eat it up right down to dessert,
I fear the cook’s feelings will surely be hurt,
So I do my part, even though I suffer;
To be a good guest, I’m a belly stuffer.
By Karl Fuchs

as many of you know, I love Fall. The fabulous leaves are my favorite.. and when the snow comes (which I think always comes too early too!) I get a little sad, because the trees are then bare, and don't have any pretty leaves on them. I hate when Winter sets in. Ugh.

But, back to Thanksgiving.. What are your favorite things about Thanksgiving? To me,

Thanksgiving is..

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!
Cuz who doesn't love giant balloons?

The Food:

Dallas Cowboy's Football!

and, Shopping!

oh, and family time is good too ;)

Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow!

The Changeling

>> November 19, 2009

As mentioned a few posts back, I am a Netflix newbie. The first 2 movies I received were The Changeling, with Angelina Jolie, and Amelie, a French film, where I can't get the annoying French Director's commentary to turn off!! :: Sigh :: Has anyone seen The Changeling? Its kind of odd. And sad. And disturbing. I love Angelina Jolie, I really do. I think my favorite movie with her, is Beyond Borders. And all that Tomb Raider stuff.. is okay, but yeah. Anyway, I'm sure you can all guess that the reason I love Angelina, has pretty much nothing with her acting skills. Hint, think: UN.

I want that hat!

But... back to The Changeling. Its based on a true story, of a kidnapping, murder, and LA police corruption in the 1920's and 1930's, that includes them throwing Angelina's character into an insane asylum instead of just admitting that THEY had made a mistake. All because of an Election year. Of course. And to think their mistake wasn't a small one, they are trying to find Angelina's missing son, and when they supposedly "find him," its the wrong kid! So they try to convince her that it IS him, instead of admitting that they messed up. Argh. It made me hate the 1930's LA county police department that's for sure. Its just a disturbing story, and anything with children, that's disturbing, and yucky and murderous, just makes me feel kind of queasy.

When they bring her back "her son".. and she knows its not him.

However, I do have to say that the Direction by Clint Eastwood was good, and Angelina acted very well. And, I loved the colors of the film, the way it really felt and looked like the 1930's. In that I believed THEY were in the 1930s, but that perhaps I was watching a movie made during that time as well. Kudos for that.

But, all in all, my first netflix experience wasn't too grand. Let's hope for better movies next. Got any recommendations?

5 weeks, 4 days..

>> November 16, 2009

Christmas is in 5 weeks and 4 days! .. which means my Birthday (where I'll be going backwards, and turning 24 years old) is in 4 weeks and 2 days (or oh ya know, a month from today). Eek! Have you started Christmas shopping yet? Cause I sure haven't! I did start to "window shop" on amazon and Barnes and Noble last week though, and that's better than nothing right? Eek! What do you all want for Christmas?

Here's my list:

I want some Frenchy Musique.. I love french pop and rock, especially Kyo, Asyl, and Emilie Simon.

I also want some DVDs..

  • Milk
  • Paris, Je T'aime
  • Amelie
  • The Secret Life of Bees
  • Benjamin Button
  • UP
  • Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince
  • Angels & Demons

... but after figuring out what movies I want, I ended up signing up for Netflix. I've never really understood how it worked, and now! I am totally liking this idea! The Changeling, and Amelie should come in the mail tomorrow. Yay!

I've also decided that I like Classic TV is so much better than Modern TV. I'm not really loving anything that's on TV right now. Except TLC and Grey's Anatomy that is. So, I am thinking I want some TV seasons on DVD too. Like Friends, Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, That 70's Show, ER, and I Love Lucy.

And I need some reading material.. indeed. Like, The Kite Runner, Life of Pi, John Lennon: The Life (by Philip Norman), and Ted Kennedy's True Compass. I also want some French books.. both ones that teach you, and novels that are just in French.

and Randomly.. I want Jewelry from World Market.. a Lakers Hoodie, this Beatles T Shirt, and a Resistance Ball and DVD.

and I totally made an amazon wishlist. Yup, I'm a geek. Click here if ya want to take a gander: Nikki wants...

This. Is. It.

is Awesome! I love Michael Jackson! Ash, Tim, and I saw This Is It last night, and it was really good! It made me so sad.. to think that they worked so hard on that concert, that was FABULOUS, and that I'll never get to enjoy it.

But it was really nice to be able to just watch him at his greatest.. see how he wanted to present his music to the world, and how meticulous he was about it. I love when he'd say "that's why we rehearse".. and when he would just smile as the lights went down when the song was over. Say what you want about MJ, but he loved what he did. And he was damn good at it. Its nice to have something else to remember him by, maybe I won't think of little Paris' sad farewell when I think of his death anymore. Sigh.

I am SO buying the This Is It cd and dvd.. mmmmhmmm! Yay Michael!

... Now if I could only get Billie Jean out of my head.

Argh! They're not SPIES!

>> November 12, 2009

Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Joshua Fattal

Ugh, I feel awful for these three American hikers. To be held in a foreign land, a land that has such a tumultuous past with the United States.. and to now be charged with espionage. ESPIONAGE?! Seriously Iran? You'd think, that perhaps, you'd have better things to mess around with Iran, not three innocent, young hikers. I mean, I used to think that perhaps the United States would always portray Iran in bad lighting, because they are so much different than us, right? And that maybe the government deserved a break, they weren't as bad as the Bush presidency wanted us to believe.. but after this Summer and their so-called "elections", I was so wrong. But I truly still believe that the citizens of Iran, are just like us. They may have a different culture, that's root is in a different predominant religion, but they are human beings, and you can't tell me that they think these hikers were spying. They were HIKING. Hiking! So, dear fabulous government of Iran, release the soldiers, now k? You would be "killing 2 birds with one stone," in that, perhaps you could improve the public's opinion of you, not only in the United States and the West, but Iranian citizens as well.

Do they look like spies? This video was filmed 2 days, TWO DAYS! before they were detained by Iran. :: sigh ::

Sigh.. Maybe Ahmadinejad thinks that he'll get a special meeting with President Clinton like crazy Kim Jong Il did.

(if you don't know what I'm talking about.. click here: Caught in the Middle, for my original post when the Hikers were arrested in the Summer, and for additional information see the Free the Hikers website here.)

I'm thinkin' I need a Free The Hikers T~shirt:

*and hell yes for the Twilight by Thriving Ivory song on the video. I love it! Keep
Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Joshua Fattal in your prayers.

Oinked Out

>> November 11, 2009

Damn Pigs

I think I'm done with the Oink fest.

I'm still sore. And my ribs ACHE... and it wears me out to walk up stairs, but I'm not feeling too awful anymore. Oink-Oink-Oink.

Ugh.

I haven't left my house for a week. And it wasn't by choice! I mean.., it'd be nice to not go to school or work for a week and actually do something FUN (like U2.. that was fun.. did you see my pictures from a much happier week last month??) But to HAVE to stay home? That's so not exciting. I spent way too much time in bed, fooling around on Facebook, bored out of my mind. And yeah, more club crackers and sprite? NO thanks.

Plus..... now I have 2 projects due, next Friday, and I really need to get doing them..

So..

  • Any thoughts on Utah adoption policy?
  • or.. how about French Nursery Rhymes?
Happy Wednesday Everyone :D

.. and back to school and work I go

Also.. Happy Veteran's Day! No matter your political opinions and affiliations (and you know I have mine.. ), we should all take a minute today to acknowledge the sacrifices by the men and women in uniform. They. are. awesome. I could not do what they do!!

.. such crazy timing, with the whole Fort Hood Massacre. That was awful. I watched the CNN coverage of the Memorial Today. I thought President Obama did really well in his speech.

PS: Yay for the Anti-discrimination legislation that the Salt Lake City council passed last night. Yes, and wow for the LDS churches support for the Legislation. That's awesome. You'd almost think after the whole Prop 8 crap that they might not support it.

I'm mad. I'm so annoyed at Rep Matheson of Utah! He has already come out to say he will not be voting for the House Bill tomorrow. Oh ya know the big important one that would be life changing in a GOOD way for Americans. We are the only big powerful country that does not provide health care equally to everyone. We don't even try. Totally pisses me off, and makes me sad for having elected him to where he is ~ blue dog = hurl.

PS: Swine flu makes me irritable!

Swine, Fawkes, Maine

>> November 5, 2009

  • I haven't written for awhile! Ugh. Too busy, too busy.. and NOW I have the Swine. Yes, you heard me, the Stupid Stinking Piggy H1N1 has hit my house. My brother got it first, then my mother and my sister, and now ME.. But at least it gave me a second to blog, right? I've been doing mostly everything on my phone lately. Checking facebook, and emails, reading a few blogs. But its SUPER hard to post a blog, or to comment on another person's blog on my phone.. so I really have been reading all your blogs, or at least... most of them, even when I wasn't commenting! I promise, after the swine has its time, I will be better.
  • Today is November 5th. And no, I'm not British. But I LOVE England.. and its crazy Holiday today. Today is Guy Fawkes Day! So we must remember, remember the 5th of November.. if none of you crazies know what I'm talking about, and I know PinkNic knows, because I borrowed her celebratory picture for Guy Fawkes Day, which hopefully doesn't make her crazy and go blow up Parliament. (that's what Guy and his friends attempted). I think that in my swineyness.. I'm going to watch V for Vendetta today. Since that's the only way for me to celebrate, in England they get fireworks and sparklers, and yummy food. Yeah.. not in Sandy Utah, but I love V for Vendetta.
  • So, back to the swine.. I don't get to go back to school, or work until November 12th! That's a week from today. WHAT am I going to do for a whole week?! I've been wishing for a "real day off", where I didn't have to go to school or work for a DAY. But now, I won't be making any money, which is just super pleasant.. I don't get to see any of my friends, at work, school, or anywhere else! Because naturally, I can't go ANYWHERE. And, everyone else is going to be in school, while I'm sitting on my ass at home falling behind. How cool is that? Not so much, yeah I agree.
  • On a Political Note: I am PISSED off at Maine. Why is it that people think its cool to choose hatred over any kind of love and equality?!? Just who are these crazy people, that I truly do not have any respect for?
  • OH and Phoenix was awesome.. I loved it. Pictures to come soon, probably in the next week, one of the days where I have more energy to go get my camera from downstairs and bring it back up here.
