Happy Birthday Sarah!!

>> August 18, 2010

Today is one of my most favoritest people's Birthday.

SARAH BETH WOODMAN HOLMAN

 Halloween Hippies, 1994

Love her; looking at pictures, choosing which one to put on this post made me want to hang out with my Sarah! I am going to have to work on that, fo sho.

Sarah and I were inseparable from about the age of 9 to 13. We were obsessed with 90210 (the original!), making hors d'oeuvres (which we NEVER pronounced correctly! - we basically said "orders"), soupy mac and cheese, and "making time fly." We went to year round school, and during those three weeks of being off track, Sarah would be at my house by 10am, and wouldn't leave until 5:30pm. Somestimes to come back right after she had dinner. I have so many memories with her, this post will not do her justice.

Happy 26th Sarah! Friends Forever.. For Real.

  • SO many good memories with her - she made every Holiday special
  • Fernwood Mints on Christmas :)
  • Home made strawberry ice cream
  • Yummy buttery rolls full of goodness
  • That time that she peed her pants at Arby's.. will make me giggle forever
  • Her love for Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts
  • Watching sappy lovey movies with her
  • How big her smile gets when she talks about Mamma Mia
  • Her itsy bitsy perfect handwriting
  • So stinkin Stubborn - I love it.
  • She's been to almost every one of mine and my siblings sporting events, or dance and school performances - she's one of our personal cheerleaders
  • All of her funny sayings "I see.. said the blindman, as he picked up his hammer and saw" ~ and the fact that I didn't REALLY understand this until many years after she had engraved it into my brain

I love you Grandma!

Frenchy Friday Quinze: Touring le Tour Eiffel

>> May 7, 2010

Bonne Anniversaire le Tour Eiffel! (hier)

(Happy Birthday Eiffel Tower! - yesterday)

The Eiffel Tower turned 121 yesterday, May 6th. It was built in 1889, and was only supposed to stand for 20 years. However, from the popularity, and radio signal technology, the tower stayed. It has now become one of the most recognizable french icons ever.

I love the Eiffel Tower. I'm glad they kept it!

I visited the Tour Eiffel on my trip to Paris in 2005. It was the beginning of June, and it was kind of windy. Those elevators scared the living {beep!} out of me!

Looking down from the Elevator..

They're so rickety.. and creepy.. and then you go half way to the top and the tower sways a little as you step out onto the platform and look down on the city of Paris. I loved it.. and as soon as that eep! feeling leaves your stomach, you look up and think, "now I have to get to the top" your feeling of nausea, anxiety, and excitement returns instantly.

The view from the top is even better.

Some random history of the tower..

Tower Happenings

During its period of existence, the Eiffel Tower has witnessed a number of strange scenes, including being scaled by a mountaineer in 1954 and two Englishmen parachuting off it in 1984. The arrest of the infamous World War I German Spy, the Danish dancer Mata Hari, was due to the interception of one of her radio messages by the tower's radiotelegraphic center.

In 1923, the journalist Pierre Labric [who was later to become mayor of Montmartre] rode a bicycle down from the first level. Some accounts say he rode down the stairs while others suggest that he rode on the exterior of one of the tower's four legs which slope outward.

In 1925, a con artist by the name of Victor Lustig, managed to sell the tower for scrap.

Politics have also played a role in its life. During World War II, the Germans hung a sign on it that read: "Deutschland Siegt Auf Allen Fronten" ["Germany is victorious on all fronts"]. In 1958, a few months before Fidel Castro's rise to power, Cuban revolutionaries hung their red-and-black flag from the first level and, in 1979, an American from Greenpeace hung a sign reading: "Save the Seals". In 1989, the Tower celebrated its centennial with music and fireworks [the show lasted 89 minutes].

5 weeks, 4 days..

>> November 16, 2009

Christmas is in 5 weeks and 4 days! .. which means my Birthday (where I'll be going backwards, and turning 24 years old) is in 4 weeks and 2 days (or oh ya know, a month from today). Eek! Have you started Christmas shopping yet? Cause I sure haven't! I did start to "window shop" on amazon and Barnes and Noble last week though, and that's better than nothing right? Eek! What do you all want for Christmas?

Here's my list:

I want some Frenchy Musique.. I love french pop and rock, especially Kyo, Asyl, and Emilie Simon.

I also want some DVDs..

  • Milk
  • Paris, Je T'aime
  • Amelie
  • The Secret Life of Bees
  • Benjamin Button
  • UP
  • Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince
  • Angels & Demons

... but after figuring out what movies I want, I ended up signing up for Netflix. I've never really understood how it worked, and now! I am totally liking this idea! The Changeling, and Amelie should come in the mail tomorrow. Yay!

I've also decided that I like Classic TV is so much better than Modern TV. I'm not really loving anything that's on TV right now. Except TLC and Grey's Anatomy that is. So, I am thinking I want some TV seasons on DVD too. Like Friends, Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, That 70's Show, ER, and I Love Lucy.

And I need some reading material.. indeed. Like, The Kite Runner, Life of Pi, John Lennon: The Life (by Philip Norman), and Ted Kennedy's True Compass. I also want some French books.. both ones that teach you, and novels that are just in French.

and Randomly.. I want Jewelry from World Market.. a Lakers Hoodie, this Beatles T Shirt, and a Resistance Ball and DVD.

and I totally made an amazon wishlist. Yup, I'm a geek. Click here if ya want to take a gander: Nikki wants...

Always afraid of The Birds..

Today would be Alfred Hitchcock's 110th birthday.

Happy Birthday Alfred!

You did so well at scaring the crap out of people with your magical suspense!

Eek. I remember when my cousin Ryan and I watched The Birds at my Grandma's house, while we were having a sleepover there, and it was so scary! And Psycho.. such a classic.

Did you know that Hitchcock usually presented his own movies to the audiences, as part of the trailer? Telling them about his upcoming pictures, what they were about, and then a teaser trailer would follow. Awesome.

Happy 21st Birthday Ash!

>> July 8, 2009

Today is my sister, Ashley's, 21st Birthday!

Here are some reasons why my sister, Ashley, is awesome:

  • She loves me even when I talk her ear off.
  • .. and she still loves me when I cry over everything.
  • She is a real fashionista. Always looking cute.
  • She's a really good artist. Her paintings and sketches are awesome!
  • She is always learning about things, I love when she gets passionate about things and yells at my facebook friends. Always trying to educate. haha.
  • She's super organized - I wish I was more like that.
  • Ashley is also very loving, always wanting to give everyone a hug and tell them she loves them before she goes to bed.
  • I really enjoy cooking with her. We make some pretty awesome salsa, spaghetti, sandwiches, etc., together.
  • Her favorite color is orange. How cool is that? yeah, I dunno.
  • She's hilarious. See her post about me, here. It makes me giggle.
  • She loves kids, I think she'd rather talk to them instead of adults.
  • Ashley is a big advocate for animals.. She should probably own some WWF office in Utah or something.
  • She might have been born in the wrong decade.. She loves Bob Marley, Marilyn Monroe, and James Dean. I love how we've bonded over our old movie freakishness.
  • BUT the best part about Ashley is that she can curl her tongue 3 different ways, and her left foot is longer than her right.

Happy Birthday Ashley! Love ya!

Happy 76th Birthday Grandpa!

>> May 23, 2009

In honor of my Grandpa Shirl's birthday today, I decided to repost my post from his birthday last year. I love and miss him a lot. Here's a picture that we recently found, of him and my Grandma Jo so happy, young, and in love, and a picture of my mom with her Dad when she was tiny.

Happy Birthday Grandpa
5/23/08

Today is my Grandpa's Birthday. Shirley Glen Harding. He would have been 75 years old. He died 7 years ago.

For his birthday, I thought I would write of things that made him awesome.

1. He LOVED flowers: he always had flower ideas, and wanted to plant new things. Even if he did pronounce perennials, "pre-annuals" which I never understood. Before yearly? But he was my Grandpa Shirl, and he was good at flowers. When I was younger, whenever we would have weeds in our flowers he would say "When ya gonna pull these weeds, youngin'?" (yep.. he said "youngin" .. I love it, I still think of him every time I hear anyone say that). He'd always "bite" me with snap dragons too. I like snap dragons, and I think I got my obsession with flowers from him.

2. He also had Enormous Gardens. With fruits and vegetables, and somehow it grew bigger and bigger and BIGGER every year. We would eat strawberries, radishes, carrots, and the best tomatoes. The tomatoes were for yummy fresh salsa, of course.

3. He always had a story.. especially when he was getting older. Sometimes we got frustrated, because he would end up telling us the same story over and over and over again, but I'd be okay with hearing one of those stories now. Maybe the one about how he was the only 8th grader in his tiny class in Tremonton (that only went up to the 8th grade..). Or how he had to walk up hill both ways, in the snow, and only the oldest got the shoes, and he wasn't the oldest. I really believed that one for a long time. Silly Man..

4. He had the best handwriting. He was very, very much proud of his "penmanship" and would tell you if he thought yours wasn't good enough. I still remember when he told me I wrote the number 8 wrong.

5. He always made me feel smart. He was so into learning, and helping me to learn. He had me rattling off multiplication tables when I was 7. I could never remember 8 x 7, so every time he saw me he'd just say "Okay, 8 x 7?!" and make me answer. Let's just say I know the answer to that one is 56 much faster than any other now. Once when I was little, he had me tell him how to make a Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich, and me, being the gullible one thought he really didn't know how to make one. So when I knew step-by-step how to tell him to make one, it made me feel so smart, and like I had helped him make his lunch. Me, a 5 year old "youngin".. always making me feel smart.

6. He had a girly name.. Shirley, but that never got him down.

7. When he was sick once, he came and stayed with us at my parents house. I was in High School, I think about 16 years old, and I would sit in the front room and wait for my friend to come pick me up for school. He would already be up, sitting there in the dark, thinking, or looking outside. I was never sure what we were going to talk about, as we sat there, waiting. But it was never dull. I am glad I had those conversations with him now, just me and Grandpa. He'd tell me about the book he was reading, ask about school of course, and want to know "where I was going in life".

8. He was so cute with my brother. I wish my brother had known him longer. My grandpa had diabetes, and had gotten gangrene in his feet, so he was missing some of his toes. He used to make it a joke with my brother, where he would grab onto my brothers little toes, when he was tiny and ask him if he could have his toes. Timmy would squeal and run away, he wasn't about to share his toes with Grandpa. Tim was so little, but he still remembers Grandpa Shirl pulling his toes.

9. When I was little, he always let me pick the Christmas Tree for his house. Even if I always wanted it flocked..

10. He instilled in me an appreciation for John Wayne, popcorn and ice-cold pepsi.

So here's to you Grandpa, I love ya.

Girls just wanna have Fun

>> May 9, 2009

I've had quite a lot of fun the past few days. I worked 5 days in a row, so I could have Friday and Saturday off and it was so worth it! Yay! I got paid on Monday, and I have had some extra money, {well.. I had extra money, its now gone!} I bought me some dress pants for work, some blouses, a few scarves, earrings, this AWESOME necklace, from one of my favorite places: World Market and Ash and I got to buy my mom some pretty awesome clothes today for her birthday!

I also got to go to the Nordstrom Cafe with Heather yesterday {Friday}. That was a lot of fun! I haven't seen her in what seems like forever! We planned to goto Lagoon together with other "Library friends" on May 23rd, so I am excited! I love Lagoon {its an amusement park.. for non Utahns ;)} What was really disappointing though was they changed their menu! I'm so upset! I'm going to have to find out who is in charge of such things at Nordstrom. Maybe I'll call Blake Nordstrom myself, because by-golly I was wanting the Chicken Tomato Pasta thing. {tear} see picture here.

Here's some pictures from today, and my new haircut..

Grandma Jo, My mom, Me
{Ash went with us earlier in the day, but by the time Grandma came and we took pics, she was at work ~ sadness}
